Fuel gauge / range weirdness / capacity

Featured Replies

I filled up today expecting a fairly hefty bill given the current world issues..

The fuel light was on, showing 20miles till empty and I filled the tank till the pump shut off.

27.59L  You what mate?

Tank is supposed to be 50+6

I know I could have kept trying to put more in after that first click (assume the +6 is if you keep going with the pump till it dribbles down the paint work), but I never normally bother doing that so that means the tank still has at least 22L still in it, yet the gauge was telling me close to nothing left and the range pestering me to find a filling station.

So wasn't a huge expense day after all - a bonus of sorts

Maybe Tesco sell very dense fuel 😁

Is this level of fuel gauge mediocrity normal?

forgive me, where is the +6 litres coming from?

From the user manual. Assume it's from fuel gauge reading full to brimming the tank

Yeah, just read it. 6 litres of the 50 litre tank is the reserve. I'd assume that'd when the light comes on

56 litres capacity but the fuel guage will read empty and the dash display show zero miles remaining when there are still 6 litres of "reserve capacity" I actually thought it was 55 litres plus 5 reserve, all of my Octavias I managed to get over 60 litres in when driving 50+ miles with zero range showing, perhaps the MK3 is different.

That makes no sense, did you mean "empty"?

If so then yes, that would be the lower 50 litre figure, if you drive beyond zero miles remaining to the point of running out you will get the full capacity in, and some in my experience.

well I never. Always thought it was a 50 litre tank

The light comes on when there is 1/4 tank indicated (plus the 5 or 6 litres reserve capacity) so those who refuel at that point are only ever using 36, 40 at the most litres of their fuel tank capacity, or to put it another way, they would refuel 3 times compared to twice for myself.

JR, no I meant what I wrote, but looks like I thought about it the wrong way round.. I had concluded that maybe I could have squeased in another 6 if I'd have kept trying, but now I've written that down it does seem totally daft 🤦🏽

Clearly there was a fair amount of capacity still remaining when I filled up though in order to only get 27 and a bit back in

Was the fuel gauge reading full after putting in that 27.5 litres?

Assuming that your gauge was well into the red sector before you started filling, I suspect what happened was that the pump you used may have had a faulty auto-stop and 'clicked-off' early. Less than 28 litres should have only given you between 60-75% on the gauge.

& the tank capacity is the capacity of a tank even if out of the car.  How much the tank holds.

When fitted in the car there is the Up the Pipe capacity to add,

and be careful you are not Venting a Tank if filling it til you can see the fuel.

Mystery solved!

I checked my bank account & that shows £75.59 (I honestly didn't pay any attention when actually stood there at the pump! it just needed filling up)

so 75.59 / 1.639 which is 43.1L

That all makes a lot more sense although I am 20 quid poorer

Only Tesco know who's receipt they provided me with (it came from the pump after requesting a receipt). Right date, time & fuel type wrong amount and cost 🤦‍♂️

Lovely car.. sorry I doubted you 🥰

Probably 200 miles difference but Tesco have done that to me with receipts. FWIW

Could the previous customers reciept have been hanging from the mouth of the printer perhaps?

Probably 15 years ago I argued with the person in the pay cabin at the filling station that I had been charged for more than 60 litres which was impossible as that was more than my tanks capacity, I was very embarrassed to be told it was 56 litres (for example) and the price was €62 (for example), the cost had just gone over €1 per litre and before I had never paid more than €60 for a fill up.

Sounds very cheap now doesn't it!!!!!

Haha, glad I'm not the only one

Well, I watched it come out but maybe paper jam or just plain old IT issue.
