Tyre Pressures

I'm not quite sure what the mistake is in never considering something that yours and other peoples lives may depend on, it's not like taking a wrong turning.

The reason that I find it scary is that I am under no illusions and believe that the vast majority of todays motorists fall into that camp and that its myself who is the exception, the sheer volume of vehicles on the road with so few actually having regular safety & maintenance checks is what makes it scary rather than what individuals do.

I agree ... but I think one of the issues is that cars have become so technical these days that drivers aren't inclined to do anything with their cars until a light comes on.

So we have TPMS in this case to switch on the warning light but that itself requires setting when the tyres are inflated and even then it still lets you set it at the wrong pressures.

I'm not surprised people forget the simple things when cars are so packed full of driver aids which take away from understanding the basics ... TPMS, autowipers, self dipping headlights, self dimming rear view mirror, reversing sensors, lane assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, electronic parking brake, start stop, self parking ,and in the case of some cars .... semi autonomous driving !

Cheers

In my experience, for some people, they still don't check the pressures even when the warning light comes on.

Some people wont even know what the warning light means. :o

They come in and have to ask.

I agree on your points except the one regarding the TPMS whereby it lets you inflate the tyres to the incorrect pressures.
It would have to be a very sophisicated system to detect different tyre sizes and profiles. It would also have to know whether the car had only the driver or was fully loaded, unless this info was  loaded into the computer beforehand.
