First tuning thoughts..... ??

Featured Replies

Hi All

I have a stock Octavia 2014 Octavia TSI in 1.4.

As i understand it the output when new should of been about 120 Bhp.

I've been thinking about how i may get this up a little. Yes the quickest way may be with a re-map but the performance % increase will take it above the level my insurance company will cover.

Is there another way to add between 10 - 15 Bhp and would this even be noticeable \ worthwhile ..?

I'm not a racer but i like a prompt drive  :)

Hi, standard 2014 1.4 TSI should be 140PS = around 138 BHP. Output was upped to 150PS in 2015.

@Smoothrunnings When your insurance needs renewing change to a company that will cover the remap you want to have done.

Best know what you have before buying remaps saying what 'might be achievable'  and is that on 95 ron E10 or is it on 97/99 E5 Super Unleaded.

Good clean filter, good plugs correctly gapped and a tank of 99 ron petrol can make a car feel as though it has more go and that is for the normal Servicing cost and about £2.50 extra per tank for Tesco Momentum 99 over their 95 ron Unleaded.

The first performance mods I made on mine was an Induction kit, the Remap is still to come.

Have you looked into a 'PedalBox'? I had one on my BMW 5 Series, and it makes the car a lot of fun to drive.

Ok idiot mode engaged.....

Pedal Box....?

Induction Kit... ?

I do IT not mechanics ... :)

Pedal box is a box that you plug in between the accelerator pedal and the car that allows you to tune the feel. Can make a big difference especially if the actual power of the car is enough.

Induction kit is a replacement intake. There has been videos on tuning the 2.0 and induction kits usually add noise only and can sometimes reduce the power.

What I would do if not willing to wait for a map under a different insurance company:

- Pedal box, your insurance may not increase as the power isn't affected.

- Check the air filter is clean and the oil changed and run it on premium fuel permanently (not just a tank now and then).

- Consider handling upgrades like lowering springs and/or sport shocks.

- Last but probably the most important thing so should be first, good tyres. Make sure they are all the same and you check the pressures. Maybe even play with the pressures to fine tune the ride and handling.

As I said, the Pedal Box made my car a hell of a lot more fun to drive. In fact, I'll probably fit one on my current car too.

With regards to an Induction kit with a cold air feed, I chose the RacingLine 600: https://www.racingline.com/air-intake-r600-r600evo

I guess the difference it makes depends on what engine you have. The throttle response on my VRS has improved greatly; the air flow into the engine is amazing, I can hear it flowing in and hear the Turbo working too.

I'd previously fitted a BMC Induction Kit to a VW Golf I had, and once again, it made a huge difference.

Others might not have had the same experience, but that's because it depends on your set up and choice of kit. An induction kit with an open air filter will draw in hot air and be counter productive, however a cold air feed certainly does make a difference.

I would say your first port of call should be a Pedal Box, and TBH that's probably all you'll need.

Hi All

Many thanks for your responses.

Yes i only have the 1.4 but put the DSG in to manual mode take off the T\C and run up is enough to make me want to slow down when the needle hits 60 !

Seems like this Pedal Box thing is where i need to be, the car has plenty of power for me ! 50 mph -80 mph flies by with plenty more left.

Conversely the 1.4 in Auto (even using Sport) feels a little lacklustre in the 0-20 area and it just seems to rev too hard in the lower gears so loosing the overall acceleration..?

By enlarge im going to be driving around quite happy in Auto on either Eco or Normal but would like something just a little extra when its play time.

Am i making any sense...

Anyone have a good recommendation for the supply and Fit of a Pedal box in the south east (Guildford \ Portsmouth \ Southampton etc).

You are making sense.

In S all that happens is that the DQ200 7 speed twin dry clutch DSG holds the gear to a higher RPM before changing up.?

How do you get on with Manual changes?

The engine has the Max PS / Nm that it has where it has it and you want to be in the gear that you can get that at.

?

Why not get a remap and also have the best tyres you can fitted.

?

Was your DQ200 DSG part of the Service Campaign started in 2017 on some from 2013-2015.  This was a software update. '34H5',

Check and see if it was needed and done or outstanding.  (There might be a sticker in the spare tyre well with '34h5' a date and a dealers stamp.

oh that's interesting..

ok

yeah love Manual for fun its defiantly quicker, but i cant be arsed any more with constantly changing gear in traffic etc etc.

Will check for the sticker as it may need dealer service and give my local a call to soo..  what is the 34H5 update any other way to see if its been appled..?

Pedal Box I would buy online from the official website: https://www.pedalbox.com/en/

Fitting is dead easy, it takes around 15 minutes, there are videos online as well as detailed instructions included.

Trust me, you will certainly feel the difference.

The car is a 1.4 TSI with a DQ200 DSG, really if you want or need mo go then remap the car.

There is a world of difference when talking a 2l TSI 230 ps & wet clutch DSG.

Hi All

Just spoke to my insurance (Admiral) and a PedalBox falls under a transmition change.

Listed with them as 3 types

Remap

Replace

ShortShift \ QuickShift

The first 2 are not covered the third is just a £25 admin fee...

I'm not sure what a short shift is but from what I've read a Pedal box basically changes gears faster (so giving better acceleration) and would therefor be a Quick shift ..?????

As mentioned happy with the cars power for me at higher speeds but would like some better acceleration between 0-30 ..

So I'm assuming this would give a better 0-60 ..?

Just goes to show that Admiral are not worth using.   I hope they committed that to paper.

ShortShift \ QuickShift

What does this even mean?

Short shifting a gearbox (manual or automatic) can mean either "changing gear earlier" (to keep the revs down) or modifying the gear linkage to reduce the travel between ratios.

Quick shift usually means either moving the lever faster or reducing the time an auto (or automated manual) spends in neutral between gears.

So Quick Shift / Short Shift conversions are not uncommon and AF have it in their 'Declared Mod blog'.

Pedal box has nothing to do with the gearbox. It more closely relates to a mode selector that changes to the response of the accelerator on a manual car.

I'd be phoning about for a company that knows what it is.
