Furby vRS TDi - Engine Performance?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just managed to clock the 2k mark after one month and half driving. Can any fellow briskodians tell me when does the turbo kick in on the furby vRS, I have got to say there seems to be significant noise to be heard? I assume it's working OK somewhere in the 'background'? Also is it true the fuel consumption will improve as the engine 'beds in', because currently I'm averaging 43 MPG (according to my long term memory trip computer) mainly my trips are short and in this cold winter weather, with a few weekend trips on the motorway for 80 miles - which seems far of the 53 MPG combined stated in the tech. spec.

OK, so mine isnt a Furby, but the turbo on mine becomes more than noticeable around 1800rpm.

As for fuel economy, the VW tdi,s continue to loosen up for around 10k miles, but they get better all the time. One thing I did notice about the Fab vRS when I tested one, was the short gearing and wanting to boot it, which all of course dont help with economy. PLus of course the tall top gear which means "slightly over the limit time".

At the time, I wished mine had the 6 speed box, but now I am glad it isnt and I just have 5 as the spread is better IMHO.

I agree with you on the gearing, after owning this 'hooligan' diesel hatch I have had a good workout with my left arm, due to the constant changing of gears to match engine speed and transmission. Reference performance, I do notice the change with using BP ultimate diesel, the engine sounds less rattly, more like a burbly sound now - not sure about MPG, time will tell. This stuff costs a fortune at 83.9p/ltr. Thanks for the advice.

I dont use BP Ultimate in my Superb, I stick to cheap petrol stations, but use Millers Diesel Clean Plus....which has the same effect on performance and economy.

We get around 41/42 in the Superb around town and 48/50 on a run, although its still not fully run in and it also hasnt had a proper economy/big run either.

Done about 2500miles now in mine, and noticed the performance is getting more predictable, when I first got it it seemed to boost really hard at time and hardly at all at others, but now it's much more predictable, I'm apparently getting 39.9mpg average on the long term memory, but hell theve been fun 2500 miles ;) so not really worried about it, hell for this sorta fun (although RWD tail antics are missed in the furby) my MR2 get's about 18mpg! so hell this is cheap ;). Although when I do go up to the nottingham office (motorway 140 miles a day) I get 50mpg ish every time. And as for Ultimate either get some millers (mines in the boot next to me fire extingisher, now called DieselPower Plus JFYI) or find a shell that does there 'optimax' diesel (have a look on shell.co.uk, there's a list of all the stockists), oh yeah meant to say it's at 1bout 1700 or 1800 rpm, to test, pull off in 1st get up to 10mph change into 2nd then press throttle, wait, wait, woosh!
