Non vrs mods

Featured Replies

Looking at air filter intake and exhuast combos any suggestions, seems to be loads of options for vrs, monte carlo but not standard models?

Any experience with darkside developments air intake?

Any guidance appreciated.

Car is a 2010 1.6tdi elegance model.

Welcome.

So vRS are petrols,  and a petrol Monte Carlo is of no interest to you,

but a 1.6 TDI CR Monte Carlo is just a trim model of a 1.6 TDI CR so just look and see what Air Intakes are for that engine.

Some of those with modded 1.6 TDI's will be along hopefully.

Don't waste your money, those parts won't do anything on a turbodiesel which is why nobody makes anything for it.

A good remap and a turbo upgrade is the key to more power on your engine.

vRS intake pipe from the dealership.

25 euro from a dealers and a better job than any hot air cone intake.

I have a darkside downpipe on mine. Good exhaust  but its cracked once on the car it came off of and once on my car. Need stiffer mounts to stop it cracking.

What's the point, it won't DO anything, you might as well spend the money on beer, at least you'll enjoy it.

The groans have it, go ahead and stick a load of pointless crap all over your economy diesel hatchback, spend as much as you like, it's your money.

Don't ask for good advice though if it's validation and herd status you're really after.

@sepulchraveim not after validation or herd mentality, my previous car was a true tinker toy and understanding cars i know not all mods are great for every car, this is why i asked the question so if you havent got helpful advice dont comment. Find your posts a little passive aggressive, but do appreciate your opinion.

Little in the way of tinkering on a modern car but you can do a little bit to it.

(Aside from a remap and exhaust, these are cheap and or free things I've done to mine.)

On mine I've:

-Deflapped the airbox

-Fitted a vRS intake

-Cleaned out the Egr pipe and ASV

-Cleaned out boost pipes

-Gutted the turbo damper

Some little things you can do aside from a remap. No harm making it breathe easier, last I checked my cars running fine after all the abuse I've given it.

The trouble is modern diesels don't need more air, they're already running too lean, hence all the NOx reduction gear, they need more fuel and the only way to do that is with a remap.

Tuning diesels is almost the opposite of tuning petrols in terms of strategy, that's why most of the standard petrol tweaks don't work.

So fitting a free-flow exhaust might improve turbo spool slightly, hence fractionally more boost, but there won't be any more fuel to go with that extra air so the engine will actually lose power slightly whereas on a petrol a wide band lambda probe will detect the extra oxygen and the ECU will increase fuelling to suit.

Passive aggressive indeed.

To add to this, the intake is usually bigger than it needs to be anyway, so it's not going to be the limiting factor on stock or even moderately tuned engines. Plus the MAF and turbo will regulate the amount of air getting into the engine anyway so unless you remap, a bigger intake may not yield any improvement anyway.

If its just good looks your looking for then crack on with cone filters etc. Doubt it will make any difference in power but may look smart with bonnet open. I go to a regular car meet with loads of upgraded cars. (modern and classic) Some of them have spent thousands and they do look very impressive but the number of owners that I speak to who have blown engines/gearboxes with huge turbos etc is fairly high. Fine if you have a bottomless money pit.

Personally if your looking for more power go for a proffesional remap plus spend the money on upgrading brakes/discs and decent tyres/wheels
