Outer CV joint? (6Q0 498 099 DX)

Featured Replies

Chaps,

Quickie. My MK2 Fabia (2007, I think it's a BBM engine) has a knackered CV joint. It has a vibration on drive related to road speed which feels like a wheel balance problem but it happens right down to very low speeds. I've had the front wheels off and the N/S CV boot is torn with grease everywhere.

So, new joint and boot time. And it seems that joints cost anywhere between about £20 and £120. I assume that RIDEX, LPR, Kamoka, GSP, Denckerman and so on are not worth bothering with? (Let me know if this is wrong.) The brand that I know is GKN Lobro, which seem to be nearer £60. However I'm confused about part numbers. It seems that the Skoda part number I need is 6Q0 498 099 DX, which is £55 from ECP, here:

However this lists it as ONLY fitting a VW polo.

Is this the right part? Have ECP simply listed it slightly incorrectly on their website? Are other brands worth considering? In these slightly tight times I don't want to spend more than I have to, but neither do I want to buy something that is rubbish and have to re-do it in 6 months time.

Thanks for your help.

The Fabia is mechanically the same car as a Polo in the drivetrain. ECP website is not terribly clever and neither are their cheap parts. Stick with a known OEM brand rather than imaginatively named Chinese crap.

Guys,

Thanks for the replies. On closer examination I'm not sure why I thought that the ECP link I posted was the part number in question. It lists as being suitable for a VW Caravelle, which is quite a different sort of thing to a Polo/Fabia/Ibiza.

KeithCheetham, thanks for the recommendation of J&R. They do indeed have CV joints and I've ordered one from them.

I'll keep this thread updated.

Minor update: I bought the part from J&R, less than £20 delivered. It looked OK; the steel wasn't made as thin as possible and there seemed to be the correct induction hardening in the races of the outer part. We'll see how it lasts. Thanks for the recommendation KeithCheetham.

(An aside, but it's held in with some odd fasteners; 36mm 12point socket needed to get the hub nut off, which looked like the sort of thing you'd wind your blinds up with! And the commonly-available Laser socket from Machine mart didn't fit as the wall thickness was too great, meaning it needed to be 'tweaked' with an angle grinder!)
