Hard to get out of P when parked on a sleep slope?

I've noticed a couple of times my shift stick being quite stiff to move out of P into gear. Mostly it's ok.

 

I was parked just now in a parking space on a really steep slope facing downwards. I'm sure it's probably related to this? Thinking about it, the other times it's a little stiff is when leaving my driveway which is also on a bit of a slope (facing down). On the flat I think it's fine.  So I'm guessing maybe it needs to 'hold' more on a slope which is making it feel stiffer to change out of P?

 

I'm just curious, has anyone else experienced this? and is there anything I should or shouldn't do in this case? 

It was almost as if I wasn't pushing down on the brake it was so stiff, except I was. But it was an exceptionally angled slope that I was parked on. I almost felt I was forcing it and do it some damage and I could really feel it as it came out of P (I was obviously pressing the button on the side of the gear stick too).

That will help for sure. The technical issue is that the car is resting on the park brake pawl, and when you try to select  N (or D) you're working against a ton and a bit of Skoda.

Strictly speaking, I wonder whether the sequence should in fact be:

1.  Come to  stop

2.  Apply parking brake

3.  release footbrake

4.  put into "P"?

 

I tend to find that on a slope, there's still usually a small amount of additional movement as the car settles on its rear springs once the footbrake is released.

The coming to a stop is with the foot on the brake so yes.

But then if Stop / Start is active then while in D the engine might stop, or Autohold is active. 

 

So whatever, 

you apply the e-Brake before moving the shifter through N & R to  P.

Yes definitely going to start applying the parking brake First when on a slope. Thanks all

It does not matter if it is before or after moving to P, just apply handbrake before releasing footbreak.

Even if you have already turned off the car.

In one article I read the following sequence for longer gearbox life:

1. Stop and hold the brake 

2. Switch to N

3. Use parking brake 

4. Release the pedal

5. Switch to P

Yes, that would work.  It's a bit tedious though.  As long as the last thing you do is put it into 'P', you should be fine.  You just want to get to the point where the handbrake is preventing the car from moving, rather than the gearbox.
