Any Dublin-based members

Featured Replies

Further to my previous post about buying a car from the Republic and registering in the North, I know I am asking a big favour, but would there be any members in the Dublin area willing to have a look around the car in question for me, I'm up on the North coast which makes it difficult for me to view the car without having to set out on a lengthy 3hr+ journey. As long as you don't look at it and decide to buy it from under my nose I would be eternally grateful and would cover any costs incurred!

Whereabouts is the car based in Dublin? The main road from the North of Ireland down south - M1 - rivals UK motorways for most of the way and Dublin to Belfast takes 1 hour 40 minutes if sticking to the speed limits (no doubt you will) to give you an idea.

Its also an excuse for a meet!

Let me know the location of the car and I might be able to find one or two members to have a look (and I'd do it if its nearby to me)

I don't mind having a look, I'm based in Dublin. Sounds like a good excuse for a meet!

Dr. Octavia, you have PM

Is the car second hand or new?? If it's second hand it is a very very dear way of buying a car as you will effectively be paying the VRT in the south, and then you will have to pay VAT on top of the price you paid for the car once you go to register it here!!!

If it's brand new (which I doubt since you need someone to look at it for you!) then you should be OK as there is no need to pay the southern taxes!

 VRT does not have to be paid on an export, as in this case.

rob1sp any luck getting car?

I know that the VRT doesn't have to be paid on export, but if the car is second hand, then then VRT will have been paid on it, and the owner of the car wouldn't really be taking the VRT value off the car if you catch my drift!!!! I'm probably making no sense at all!!!!!

I've imported/exported a few cars from the south myself, but they were all brand new, so no VRT paid.

Can't get through to the guy, the number in the ad isn't recognised, from what I have been told its a nuisance getting the car registered up here anyway, may just look for one over in England, although its the lowest mileage example I've seen advertised by a long way, which is playing on my mind quite a bit, by the way, its not a Skoda, its a Volvo ( )...850 ( )... R (;) )!!!!

my brother got a car from the south last year.....no VAT to pay or VRT....theyve already been paid in the donor country so cant be applied again!!!....i get what your saying about the exspense.....raelly your paying over the odds for a second hand car where it woulod be cheaper in the uk due to no VRT being added!!!

Not really any clearer on the whoe importing thing, it sounds like its a bit of a grey area, will ring the DVLNI office tomorrow, hopefully they can shed some light on the subject...

its really simple.......you buy a car in the south and just re-rigister it in the north...all you do is inform NIDVLA that you want to re-rigister it and they give you a new reg number and your off......any duty has been paid when the car was new:)

That's as straightforward as I hoped it would be when I first saw the car advertised, but since then there have been so many conflicting stories that its hard to know. IF I could just get through to the seller to see if car is still for sale it would obviously help as well, bl**dy wrong numbers...

that is as straight forward as it is:) it only gets complicated when you import from a non EU country.....just make sure you get all the documents like NCT (same as MOT) its just the same as the UK....you cant reg it if it doesnt have an MOT:)

Hey Rob, I'm also in Dublin....if ya ever get through to that number.

To be honest I can't understand why you'd be bothered buying a 2nd hand car down here (as we are a lot dearer that up your neck of the woods as the VAT & VRT have already been added), unless its an absolute bargain.

A NEW car is a different story as you wouldn't have to pay VAT & VRT.

Btw would a White 01 Octavia 4x4 with Revo, ihi turbo with FMIC & R32 Brakes and Full Power Flow interest you, it was on UK plates, the guy mentioned a 10k figure but that included Duty to put on Irish Plates. I dunno if its still there as the guy sent me details a while back.

PM or phone me (I think I sent you my mobile no. before).

I'm not sure if there it is VAT to be paid when you go to register the car up here, but there is definitely some sort of fee to be paid!!

I know that when importing a second hand car from the north to south VRT has to be paid on it, not that helps you in any way!

Is there something that the VAT only gets paid once, it was already paid in south so you don't pay it up North aswell.

i bought my leon down south 4yrs ago. paid 17 1/2% vat when i registered it up here. :( bought it just as exchange rate was changin. still saved grand an a bit. not much difference now tho.

But that would have been brand new, where you didn't pay the VAT and VRT in the south!

As I said I'm not 100% if the fee to be paid actually is VAT, best bet is to ring the DVLNI.
