Cold start issues

Featured Replies

 Hi guys, not been on the forum for a while but have got a bit of a concern with my fabia. When it's starting from cold the engine seems to judder a bit and the tachometer moves up and down a bit, any idea what it could be? Im guessing maybe injector or something to do with timing or something i really don't know..

@LukeG99

Is this a recent thing or has it been this way since you got the car?

Best you say what engine you have in your car,what age your car is & how many miles it has done.   EDIT, I see now it says a 2014 at the side.)

There might be simple things like consumables that need changing like spark plugs if a petrol or air filter.

That seems like pretty low RPM for a cold start.

Yeah recent. It's the 1.6 TDI cayc  engine.

Hopefully someone can advise.   ??? Have you looked in the airbox recently to see if the air filter is clean and dry!  How many miles has the car done?   Has it has a fuel filter replaced?  And has it had the Defeat Device emissions fix done on it at some time?

I've not looked at the airbox but I don't think that's the problem, it's fine 89000 miles and yes when it had a service.

What's this emissions thing?

You could be right or that could be one or two mistakes on your part.  Neglecting the basics or not double-checking can often be a basic and fundamental mistake, I made one this weekend and wasted time and effort.

forgot the word 'not'

@LukeG99

I just wondered if 'The Fix' had been done while you had the car or before.

It is a software update and a flow device in the air intake on 1.6 TDI CR's.

This might show as not affected which could mean it was done, or it might show as outstanding.

I just got a notification that it's 900 miles till an oil change which means a service could be a good idea so the air filter might be the problem'.ill check.

You don't get much at a service other than engine oil and filter change and "free visual checks" unless you ask for more or they find things to repair rather than service.  An 8 year old car could need more servicing that is in the "Service" and "Maintenance" (air filter change is only at 6 years/60k-miles which I find amazingly long).  Things like MAF cleaning aren't included, as well as coolant change and other items that used to be included in services.  And that's only dealing with the relatively unimportant engine part of the car.

Attached (pdf) prices are out of date now.

These are a very troublesome engines with injectors and the EGR unit being a very common problem, get the engine ECU code read and if nothing comes up, ask for deeper analysis of the EGR system and injector balances.

Mine has the exact same issue. I took it to Skoda a few years ago as it was under the emission fix warranty, they said it was an adaptation issue and they fixed it again which they haven't. I eneded up leaving it with them for a few days as it only happened on a cold start. They were saying there was no issues and it's normal. Obviously I knew I was being fobbed off and I wasn't in the mood of arguing with them any longer. I've been living with it like this for years. I just rev it a few seconds and it idles ok after.

I ask myself what your reactions would have been in the not so distant days of vehicles with points ignition, distributeurs, carburettors and manual chokes to an idle speed  variation of about 50rpm, I know what the reaction of the garage would have been!
