New to Octavias - Help Appreciated

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Just swapped my VW Passat for an Octavia 2014 - Manual (couldn't stand not having a proper handbrake) and would appreciate some advice please.

(a)  Is it possible to permanently disable the Stop/Start function, as opposed to repeatedly switching it off?

(b)  Can a "Standard" battery be used in place of the S/S type?

Thank you.

Ian

(a) Not without some coding tool like VCDS as far as I'm aware, as detailed in this thread:

(b) Probably not unless you intend to disable the S/S via coding as in (a). A quick internet search warns that putting a conventional battery into a S/S type vehicle will result in the battery wearing out faster.

This info being provided with the caveat that I'm not an expert and only basing this on what I found and my own experience driving s/s equipped cars previously. Anyone with more expertise than me, please feel free to correct anything I said.

My own experience on a Leon. Unplug that battery monitor cable on one of the terminals. Stop start cannot function because it cannot tell the battery state. Our car been running without SS for about 3years now. Hopefully the engine will thank me for it.

It's quite easy to code out the stop/start using vcds or OBDeleven on a 2014 model. There's a section on this forum for vcds owners who will do work for little payment (biscuits, beer).

I had the original battery still in my 2014 Octavia when I got rid in 2020 after having the feature turned off for the 4 years I owned it. No issues with it when I re-enabled it to sell.

There are devices which you can connect to the S/S switch that cause the switch to hold it's last set state, rather than switch itself on. There are some threads on this on the forums here.

Hi hhcd80., gav_is_con., MarkyG82., and EnterName,

What an overwhelming and informative response to my query -- Thank you all.

I shall go seek out someone with a coding unit.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the link PetrolDave.

My usual garage has knowledge of a mobile guy with an appropriate coding unit, so he's arranging for the S/S to be "killed" sometime next week.

Cheers,

Ian
