Power Window: Goes up and then it winds back down to 1/3rd

Featured Replies

Hi all,

have an interesting issue here unfortunately. RHD vehicle, passenger window controller (on the left), when commanded to fully close automatically, the window goes all the way up, stops and then winds back down to about 1/3 of the height. When the same command is issued via remote control (open all windows - slide them down via unlock press for 3 seconds and then lock button press for 3 seconds, the behavior on that window is the same. However, when commanded from the driver's side, it works ok (90% of the time as it happened as well that it went down). But the passenger controller fails to close it 100% of the time.

Any ideas? thanks !

Try resetting the windows.
Ignition on and roll all the windows down with the four switches on the drivers armrest.
Wait 5 seconds.

Then wind them all up at once whilst continuing to hold the switches up.

When they reach the fully closed position do not let go of the switches - hold them in the up position for at least 10:seconds.
Re test your passenger window and hopefully this will have cured the memory issue.

I’d start with this as well. But you don’t need to do them all at once and you don’t need to hold for 10 seconds, a few seconds is more than enough.

on top of that I’d get some silicone lubricant and make sure the runners are greased correctly to allow smooth movement with no resistance

Hi, thanks for the tip, didn't know the trick about resetting the windows.

In regards to running them smooth or not, they have absolutely no problem, they work really well. It just seems that it doesn't know when it's supposed to stop and the safety detection kicks in (like if it detects an obstacle) and then it winds back down. Let's see how the reset goes. I will keep you posted

They may be moving smoothly but if the motor detects increased resistance (you might not see it as the motor takes up the strain) they will back off as part of the anti pinch method. It cant distinguish between a trapped limb or increased friction.

Also, do you have wind deflectors fitted?

You’re right. But in such a case this would happen whatever the window has been actuated from driver or passenger button, I guess.

God I hope not. They’re aren’t many items I can think of which do precisely the opposite of their design brief and function but this excels in both areas as they’re bloody noisy and useless at providing draft-free ventilation. I put them on and off they came 5 days later.

They do what is written on the tin.

It's just you dont appreciate where they deflect the wind to 🤣

no wind deflectors.

was about to do the reset and it appears to be ok now. the only thing I can think of is that the car was in the car wash  and after that we have noticed that. The passenger side controller is a bit creaky too so maybe I will just change it.

Btw, does anyone of you know of a decent oem parts numbers lookup website that would do the search based on my VIN? Thanks all.

The creakiness makes me wonder if maybe one of the sliders that connect glass to lifting mechanism has broken.

Investigate by moving both front windows to halfway open and try gently lifting the glass between fingertips, near front and rear of each pane, looking at how much vertical 'play' there is. Compare front/back of pane on each side and compare sides. If there is such a breakage it will result in significantly more movement, but don't be forceful, it'll be readily obvious if there is a breakage.

Don't think it'll take VIN, but I use this site for parts lookups lately. More up to date than any other I've found: LLLParts

Hi @Pete_Ex-Wino, the creakiness I meant directly from the controller itself, clearly from the pressing down up, that's where the sound comes from, doesn't have this nice haptic feel as when new.

Thanks for that LLL Parts, looks pretty decent though I've struggled to find that controller button for example
