Squeaky drivers door

Featured Replies

I am trying to stop an annoying squeak when opening the driver's door.  I have tracked it down to the lower part of the door around the hinge area.  I have tried WD40 on the hinge without any success.  Today I spotted that the door hinges have a black rubber cap which can be removed by hand to reveal a white knurled "grub screw".  Would this be the way to lubricate the hinge ?  And, if so, what should I use.  The noise is just annoying me - almost as much as the dealership that serviced it and didn't lubricate the hinges as per the service schedule.  Pics attached.
Grateful for any info and advice.

WD40

Normal WD40 is a solvent.

A spray with this on both hinges and especially the check strap in between both hinges.

You want to spray in to the door cavity where the rollers are.

Then exercise the door by opening and closing.

Then lubricate the same bits with a spray grease like WD40 White Lithium grease.

Then exercise the door by opening and closing again.

The grease it better for long term protection / lubrication.

Thanks, AG Falco

In my case that rubber edge (inner yellow circle) makes the noise when it touches to the body panel, I put grease on it, does the job for a couple of months, then re-apply  :)

Thanks for this, AGFalco.  I believed WD40, although a solvent, also contained slightly heavy distillates that did not evaporate but remained behind and acted as a lubricant.  This was my reason for using it.  Thanks for your prompt reponse.

Thanks for your prompt reply, irfant.  This was in fact my problem.  Cured by a thin film of grease as you suggested.  (I would still love to know what the knurled "grub screws" on the door hinges are for though !).

Its not knurled its a male splined head fastener and it's function is to be unscrewed to allow removal of the door, they are lift off hinges.

Thanks J.R.  I was hoping someone on here would know.

I may be corrected, I have not had need to remove the doors but when like you I saw the fastener and looked closely that was my conclusion.
