Converting headlights from LHD to RHD

Featured Replies

Having bought my xenon equipped Yeti less than a year ago I find myself with an MOT failure as the nearside headlight is seemingly from  a Left Hand Drive car !!

The dip cut off lights up oncoming traffic.

Was anybody successful with changing that aluminium plate round ?

@Derek-P-RThis is from the 2013 Yeti maintenance manual,

Change headlight for right-hand / left-hand traffic

The position of the ray of light should be adjusted when driving in countries which drive on the right or the left thereby preventing blinding of the drivers travelling in the opposite direction.

On vehicles which have the Maxi DOT display in the dash panel insert, the position of the ray of light in the menu „Maxi DOT“ function „light and sight - tourist light - right-hand drive or left-hand drive“ can be adjusted see → Owner's manual Yeti.

If the dash panel insert is not equipped with the Maxi DOT display, the position of the ray of light must be adjusted with → Vehicle diagnostic tester.

I have the maxidot display but it's not as simple as changing to tourist mode, I actually have one right & one left hand drive light units fitted, presumably when correcting accident damage as the wing is dated later than the car. That light unit is 7 years newer.

I'm afraid that setting doesn't actually change the cut-off from RHD to LHD or vice-versa...

Instead, it just disables the AFS functionallity, drops both headlights slightly to avoid glare and adjusts one (passenger side?) inwards to make up some of the lost light coverage.

If Derek does indeed have the wrong cut-off pattern, they will likely need a new headlight...

A xenon projector is a precision device, you might be able to flip and bend the shield to convert it but I doubt many have tried :notme:

Alternatively , is the projector unit available  , rather than replacing the entire headlight ?

I'm not sure which projector the Yeti headlights use. Most aren't sold to normal consumers but you might find a used example on eBay or something with compatible mounting holes.

Otherwise, a damaged RHD Yeti xenon could be a good starting point.

Just be careful, headlights of this vintage may be 'perma-sealed' so the standard oven trick might not soften the sealant up enough to split the headlight easily. I don't know enough about the Yeti headlight to say whether splitting is necessary.

I'll bare that in mind, thanks.

Do you know this or were you advised by the garage?

If the latter then check the part number to confirm the veracity of the information before starting any invasive procedures you may regret.

my right light has 5L2 941 016B 10s.

the left has 5L1 941 017C 12s.

The left one appears to be Left Hand Drive.

Can anybody out there confirm that for me please ?

The garage are correct.

The 5L1 vs 5L2 is the LHD/RHD thing. I imagine someone needed a replacement and bought a more available, cheaper version from abroad 🤔

Exactly what I thought..

    Thanks.

Do you have that for xenon lights ?

That link is for the Xenon lights in the description it says "Gas Discharge lamp"

You can see the 5L1 is for LHD & 5L2 for RHD

My headlight has turned out to be definitely  LHD so I've taken it out of the car.

The projector unit doesn't look like it'll come out of the hole at the back .

Tell me about the oven trick.

what temperature do you think ?

Hi, I am having problems in changing my Xenon headlights from rhd to lhd as I have taken my car over to Portugal. I can't find lhd one's anywhere, well only the one's on ebay and I doubt they will fit anyways.. And the only other way is to get from the manufacturer, which I would need to win the lottery to afford!!
