Kamiq - gas struts for bonnet?

Featured Replies

I've searched, but couldn't find anything.  Has anyone fitted gas struts to their Kamiq bonnet?  Is it possible? Obviously if anyone has, I'm interested in a link to a supplier of  suitable struts.

That sounds a good idea.  Over the years, car bonnets have got heavier and heavier.  Electrically operated boot lids or hatch backs are an option on many cars, so why not the same for bonnets?

Car bonnets are not supposed to be getting heavier over the years as cars are supposed to be getting lighter and have been.

We are talking about a medium sized family hatchback here.

So adding complexity and weight with electrically operated stuff makes no sense.

Maybe some of the gas struts as fitted by people to Fabia or Octavia will be usable.

A google of 'front hood bonnet gas struts for skoda kamiq'   brought up results including on Amazon.

Car bonnets have got heavier over the years because of the extra sound deadening on the underside, and possibly, too, because of higher accident protection requirements.  I accept electrically operated bonnets are a bit of a luxury (although at nearly 80, it's a luxury I would be willing to pay for), but gas struts would certainly help.

That is why VW Group / Skoda started deleting under bonnet insulation on some cars.

& no Spare wheel / Tyres, and using less sound deadening, less paint, thinner glass etc..

WLTP / RDE & now RDE2.

Thanks, all.

It looks as though nobody has taken the plunge yet, so I think I'll do a bit of research to find what might work.

Roottoot, I think I must be getting weaker then.  The bonnet on my Kamiq looks a much smaller unit than my old Octavia, so it was a surprise to find that it was weightier than I expected.  Fitting gas struts to the Octy made a big difference so I was hoping that there was already an established solution for the Kamiq.  I never thought of checking on Amazon/Ebay - doh, so obvious!  Their offerings so far seem a bit pricey compared to the modest cost I paid for the Oct kit, so I'll see what I can find.

If I come across something that works, I will report back.

Ali-Express is usually the cheapest for conversion kits containing the struts and mounts although they look silly money at present.

distrnc  - Thanks for that.  I think that must be a recent addition to the Kopacek site because I never spotted it when I checked there for something else.

It's a good find - both because the price is fairly good and because I know from past experience that they only sell stuff that is of proven quality.  I had been researching kit that I could buy cheaply from various suppliers - I know the size of struts needed, it was then just a question of sourcing the necessary additional bits for attaching the struts to the hinges etc. but I got side-tracked by other, more pressing issues.  For convenience I may well go with the Kopacek offering - so thank you for the info.

i tried it on my first scala but the bonnet would not shut squarely  so i gave up, might have another try on my new kamiq as there appears to be a bit more room

Resurrected thread, - I’ve finally got it sorted. Whoopee!

I was intending to get the Kopacek kit, as suggested on here, but when I looked closely they said that they were wary of despatching stuff to the UK – which I found surprising as I thought they would have sorted out any post-Brexit issues by then. So it went on the back-burner and then I got tied up with more important things.

A few weeks ago I had a fresh look. Google took me to Aliexpress where there were three or four bonnet strut kits on offer, all seemingly from the same supplier at wildly different prices – and all had a note that they would not despatch to a UK address. That had me mystified – how come even the Chinks are now avoiding trade with the UK!

Then, with a flash of inspiration, knowing that I would soon be going on a trip to France, I amended my personal information to show a French address. Suddenly they were quite happy to despatch to me, albeit with the usual 6/7 week delivery date, which would make the logistics a bit tricky. Then I noticed a different advert - that also was the cheapest at the euro equivalent of £27 and that claimed it would be fulfilled from Poland within a week. So I waited and placed an order on the evening before I finally set off.

Good job I held back - it arrived in only four days - and from Germany, not Poland. The kit was of perfectly good quality (obviously time will tell), I got it fitted within thirty minutes and it works a treat – all for the princely sum of £27. Opening the bonnet is now a doddle, involving no effort.

@lastgaspcan you post a link to this, might get some delivered to my French house!

Hi sussamb

I'm crap at links. Does this work?

mobi.aliexpress.com/item/4000785625344.html

(I think the euro price may have risen - only slightly - since I ordered mine).  If you get a kit I can give you a tip or two for fitting it.

It's the cost and complexity of registering for exporting to the UK that puts suppliers off in the EU.

And we know who to blame for that... but they chose to believe all the lies
