Pointless automotive trends part 232....diamond cut wheels against silver paint

Just why? None of the styling contrast of black/grey diamond cut, but all of the hassle to repair!

Loaned the Karoq to my brother for a week and he scraped a wheel in two places - now needs a full strip, paint and lathe skim to fix to new condition

Accidents happen, and he's mortified. Luckily, found a very good condition lightly used original wheel on eBay from a Skoda dealer for £120 - I'll keep the damaged one for now as a spare just in case.

Rant over....

Ouch! But glad you sourced a replacement. Are these 19inch wheels? They always look great, but I prefer the  standard 18inch wheels for this reason - I feel more confident if the tyre sidewall stands proud of the rim as much as possible, as a "buffer". I have a few too many minor kerbing incidents over the years.

My tyres are approx 13mm wider than the rim and a little more nearer the road.

I do agree - what benefit is the diamond cut if it cannot be seen, a contrast in colour is needed.

Yes, these are optional 'Crater' 19s, and as fitted to the SEL front wheel drive models, have a 40 profile tyre...a bit pointless on a small family SUV personally, but that's what Skoda gave it in their wisdom

Ironically named wheel, as my brother claims it was a big pothole that did the damage...

They were already fitted to the car and as it was a lease, I had no part in speccing them

It seems that "brushed" is Skoda terminology for diamond cut :D

If it was a pot hole that caused the damage then get back to it and take a photograph of it with a ruler in situ and you should be able to successfully make a claim against the council.  For that sort of money it has to be worth persuing.

Cheers

Paul

You might successfully claim against a council of whoever has the maintenance contract where not a local council.  But It requires that it was reported then the actioned an inspection and had it done or not done.   You can check their records of request information.  Threads in the General automotive section of this forum. 4 nations in the UK and that is relevant.  So check Pothole websites.  See if the location has others posting the pothole was reported.   Thank goodness the public are not paying for every vehicle damaged by a driver going over a pothole.   Especially since so many see ones daily as do cyclists and never make a report to who is responsible for that road.

Hard to tell from that photo but if they are telling you it's a big repair then my advice is to shop around for different quotes. We had worse on two of the 19" crator wheels, the smart repair cost £55 a wheel and was done at the roadside by a mobile van. The third wheel needed a full repair and had to be taken back to the workshop.  £105 for that one.

First time ever having alloys repaired. I'm very fussy, and I was so impressed by the results. The full repaired wheel was like brand new and it's only when you're really up close washing the smart repair wheels you can see the different in shading on the rim.

Must have been a kerb shaped pothole!

Just saying.................................

Or maybe a careless tyre fitter type pothole!

I’ll be using a place called “We Restore Alloys” that operate out of Dundee as well as Stirling and Kirkcaldy - they have their own lathes on site and do work for all the local main dealers as well as luxury brands like Lamborghini and Bentley dealers

They have no issue matching to exact OEM paint codes. Have used them before to repair a diamond cut wheel for my wife’s previous A4 - that was a pig to match as it had a unique to that model satin anthracite grey paint as well as a laser-etched logo. They also re-did a complete set of VW Passat CC wheels in a different OEM paint code instead of the standard VW silver  that came out brilliant
