1.2 TSI top end noise

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I would like to ask for any advice regarding top end noise, sounds like a tappet......but could be the fuel pump, the noise appears to come from this area. If the fuel pump really is the cause what are my options? replace the fuel pump? or can it be adjusted or repaired?

Appreciate any help or advice!

Regards Mark

Best go to a VW Specialist and let them diagnose your vehicle rather than those reading your post making guesses.

Find out what they think it sounds like.

?

How many miles on the car, when did the noise first appear to concern you?

Is it on start up when cold or still there on tick over when the oil is up to temperature?

?

When was the last oil change and do you have in VW504 00 / 507 00 so 5w 30 FS III (Long life oil)

EDIT.

I see your previous post now.   40,000 miles.

PS

Have your spark plugs been replaced yet?   Separate issue.

The car has done 40K, oil and filters recently replaced.....engine oil is absolutely looking like new on the dipstick. I purchased the car recently with the noise so I cannot say when it began. Noise is evident immediately on engine start, it could be a tappet.....certainly sounds like one!  I followed the noise using a screwdriver held to my ear and it seems to radiate from the fuel pump area. I was thinking someone might have experienced the same fault.....usually a weak point in the design which will fail and earn notoriety.

Is it the correct NEW Looking engine oil?

Not somebody maybe wrongly used 0w 20 FS IV  VW508 00 / 509 00

I would get 5w 40 FS oil in the car.  Not Long Life Oil and to VW502 00 which is fine for fixed service regimes.

Thanks for the link......I read all the comments.......I really feel that this noise is more repetitive than the rattle of a worn cam chain. The sound only changes frequency with engine RPM and is not influenced by engine temperature, it is always present. Maybe someone on the forum will recognise my problem description during the next few days.

Thanks for your advice so far.

I see your latest comments about the oil specification, good point I might get the oil changed sometime soon! I might just remove the fuel pump at the weekend to inspect the running surfaces. I had not considered the spark plugs....need to scan through the service history.

A quick search on Ebay for fuel pump shows there is a cam follower that sits between the cam lobe and fuel pump actuator.....my bet is on this component creating the noise?

Well the cam follower was easy to replace but barely made any difference......however the noise is changed a bit and the tap tap is now more of a rattle, probably cam chain noise. Will have to get professional advice from a garage, cam chain is a bit beyond my skill level.

If your car is from 2015, it might have the newer version of the 1,2 TSI which has a cam-belt instead of a chain and is DOHC instead of OHC.

In our Fabia II sold a year ago we had the old version and it always a distinct ticking noise from the high pressure fuel pump which is a cylindrical component that sits on top of the cylinder head.

Thanks for your update, I am confident this engine has a single cam driven by chain......I also heard some ticking noise from the fuel pump so I changed the cam follower but this did not solve my problem.

  • 3 weeks later...

Can you hear it inside the car? I hear a slight tapping and assume it is the fuel delivery pump pumping at a high pressure. Standing outside the car the engine makes a lot of ticking noises. It is the nature of the beast.
