Add Oil Warning Light

Featured Replies

Started the car up this afternoon to be presented with a yellow/ amber warning light and a message advising me to add oil with ‘you can drive on’ at the end.

opened bonnet, checked oil and sure enough, the oil was near the minimum amount.

drove 30 miles down the road (currently in the Outer Hebrides, so that was my closest place to get any), bought some oil and topped up when I got back to our holiday home.

now the oil level is perfectly acceptable but the warning light comes on still.

does this light need re-set or will it just go off after a while?

I’ve done approx 3-5 miles in the car since topping up

How much oil did you add?

Is it topped up to Area A of the cross hatch when the engine is at operating temperature.

When you opened the bonnet even if you had not topped up the Warning Light / Message would normally go out for 60 miles / 100 km.

Maybe no longer the case with an IV.

I added a litre and the level in the dipstick shows at the top of the hatchings

What is your milege? Because first 5k kms its normal that oil is consumed. Myself added about 1ltr of oil after 5k kms,, but no light has come up. There is even in the manual saying to check oil level first kms and add it if necessary.

?

When did you last check the oil and did you check it after the last oil service was done?

Is that at the top of the hatchings once you have the oil up to operating temp then parked for a few minutes?

That should be fine then.

1 litres is not always enough by the time a low oil warning shows as they can be as much as 1.3 litres low.  All engine dependent though.

What oil did you get, VW508 00 / 509 00 so 0w 20 FS IV

or VW 504 00 /507 00?  0w 30 FS III or 5w 30 FS III

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. I added 1L and after about 5 miles of driving the warning light disappeared.

Last service was in September, next one is booked for about two weeks time!

I put in VW508

In an update, I left the engine running with the bonnet up and it seems to have rectified itself thankfully.

It’s done 17500 miles, I should have checked the oil level more regularly but just one of these things that wasn’t gotten round to

This has prompted me to buy some 0w20 VW508 spec oil.   I'm just over 5000 miles now and its dropped.  I was waiting to see if the light comes on but it sounds like i shouldn't do that and top it up.  At least with 0w20 you can top it up as much as you like vs 0w30 which it says top up once only.  I always worry about over filling it.
