Battery not charging (stop driving)

Hi, just got this message on the dash tonight. I'm assuming either the altenator or battery needs replacing? Anyone experience this one?

The car will require further diagnosis to confirm the faulty part but it means exactly that, the battery is not receiving its charge from the alternator. Whether this is the alternator, belt or wiring will need confirming but there’s a fairly high chance the alternator has failed.

 

Will need taking to a garage for confirmation and replacement

Thought as much. If it turns out to be the altenator, on other cars I used to get an over the counter swap for a reconditioned one....that ok with the superb? Thanks again

Just make sure you go for a reputable brand, personally in a situation like this id either fit brand new genuine or fit a second hand genuine before i fitted some aftermarket rubbish. But thats just my opinion of it.

I dont want to start new topic, so asking here. Car started to give warning about battery not charging. 127k miles on the clock. With engine off there is 12,2V on battery connectors, with engine on is 11,8V. I have suspicion it is faulty alternator. Just want to ask, before taking it to service: can it be something else, what I can check? Thanks for any answer.

Have you checked the belt is still on and also its a smart alternator, the exciter wires need checking also.

Thank you very much for answer! Yeah, I checked belt. Charging was sometime on after starting of cold vehicle, but mostly off. I suspected problem with worn brushes in alternator. My mechanic (they are electric specialists) told me it needs to be replaced as whole unit, even before touching the car. That made me little angry, because on my old superb I replaced brushes, voltage regulator and bearing for few pounds on my own. But I was under pressure now so I pad £280 for new alternator and fitting. Thanks again for your time!
