MK3 Power Seats Not Working

Featured Replies

So, MOT failed on the Sportline 280 due to driver's power seat not working. What luck as it never got found since I am the only driver and the seat is perfectly adjusted long time ago....

Anyway, tried to troubleshoot around and the following I have done to no success in fixing it:

Power seat is the standard memory type with 3x positions. Driver only, passenger side is manual.

- Swap fuse. Nope...

- Check visible connectors under the seat to modules etc. Made sure all are connected properly and they are.

- on the off chance there is a software bug, I tried switching driver profiles, deactivating personalisation, doesn't fix the problem.

- In the settings (on screen), i tried pressing the 'seat' function and the display gives me an error stating the function is not available. I am not sure if it would bring up another menu if not faulty as I do not remember.

Short of VCDS/diagnostic tool (which I do not have), or booking it in, are there any other ideas on what I can check?

Thanks in advance🙂

Might be an idea to scan this list for known users, and find someone local.

If power is getting to the seats, you maybe have a broken communication wire, so signals are not getting to the seats.

Hopefully if you are armed with a multimeter you can check some Voltages (if you can get anywhere near)

If you’re anywhere near north London feel free to drop me a message if you want someone to look and and diagnose for you :)

the fact you’ve checked the fuse (also check fuse listed for passenger side as sometimes things aren’t translated and left and rights get confused even if you don’t have electric passenger seat) and also checked the wiring connections is a good start.

Your next port of call is either a fault memory scan or removing the seat and checking for power, ground and a canbus signal to the seat module.

it could be the seat module has failed and needs looking into being replaced (this is not plug and play and will need coding and adapting)

@ApertureS thanks for the offer but I'm in Sutton so opposite ends so not ideal.

Tbh if it's it isn't connectors and fuse, probably the module. And you know what, there is a cable tie around the module so that's a clue that it has been 'touched' before as I bought the car used about 4 years ago.

Will actually cut off the cable tie and see why it's there. I have sneaky feeling a bracket or clip has broken and it's there to hold the module. Might give me easier access too if it drop down!

What? I've never heard of a car failing an MOT due to a seat not working. Loose, yes but not 'working'?

It's this rule (yup, had to look it up)

Amazing!  But I guess in an accident you could be trapped.

Blimey, every day's a school day!

I've seen testers wiggle the backrest but I'd always assumed that was checking for looseness.

I thought the same earlier, and curiousity took hold of me 🤣

Update: confirmed fuse is OK and 12v is at the fuse box terminals. So that one 300% ruled out as I checked it multiple times to make sure...

Connectors all tight, even disconnected and reconnected a wiggly looking one. Nope.

Therefore increasingly likely it's the module (or motors but unlikely I think), will need to take it for diagnostics.

Just for anyone interested and records, my module part is as 5Q0 595 760 B.

The latest compatible revision or version is 5Q0 595 760 F which are the ones easily available to buy online.

Hopefully you can get it scanned before chucking a new part at it.  Thanks for the updates.

Skoda dealers are hopeless so tomorrow I will be calling up some independents for that.

Hopefully can confirm and then it's a matter of getting the part and hopefully sorted.

Final update.

Bought module as per part number above. £156 from Skoda.

Got a garage to swap it and all is working now.

So...If anybody's seat stop working and you have a presumably dodgy version B of the seat module... It is likely it if everything else checks out.

Out of interest, how much did it cost to get the work done? I think I have a similar situation

I told my local garage to skip fault finding (I tested fuse, confirmed voltage exist ) and just swap the module.

They charged me an hour's labour at 62quid incl. Fair charge IMO.  Total time probably like half hour but at that point, I was happy it's all working and I can get it to MOT retest.

@tartanthing Do update us on what happens. Whether your existing module is the same as mine above (revision B) and what you did to make it work again. Assuming same problem as mine.

  • 3 weeks later...

Weirdly, it has never happened since. Can only assume it was a loose connection which reconnected when I got the seat to drop down. It did give me flashbacks to a night I was driving a tour bus and all the electrics went. For some bizarre reason the wiring loom was routed under the sprung drivers seat. What happened was every bump gradually wore away the  shielding till it shorted. I thought the same was starting to happen to the car!

Resurrecting this old thread rather than start a new related one:

2017 Superb estate, drivers power seat has stopped working.  OBD scan gives code:  U020800 - Lost Communication With “Seat Control Module A”

I've checked the fuse  - #45 - and it's OK (continuity test with meter as it's a metal cased one), and also #26 (heated front seats) as a precaution - also OK.  Groping under the seat I can only see/feel one connector and it seems tight.

A few questions:

Is there only the one connector, and how does it disconnect so I can connect/disconnect it a few times to clean up any possible bad contact?

How is the module fixed in place and is it easy to remove? Can it be done with the seat in situ or does the seat need to come out?

If I replace the module, does it need any coding to let the system know it's there?

(The first two questions wouldn't be needed if weren't for the fact that it's a black connector on a black module in a dark place, upside down with no clearance!)

Thanks

JackD
