Octavia mk3 booked in for repair under warranty

Dropped car to Skoda at 8am today. Got a call back within 1 hour to say they can not cover any warranty work on my car as it's a private hire taxi and the mechanic cancelled the appointment and did not inspect the car.

Went back to collect car as soon as i got the phonecall and was advised I need to pay £114 for diagnostic check that was carried out.

I told Skoda I wasn't going to pay a penny as they never done any checks as confirmed on the phone and I was advised I'd need to pay full retail price plus the diagnostic fee if I go ahead.

Not very happy as firstly they never gave me any warranty repair booklet with the car which would explain what's covered and what isn't.. I had to ask on this forum for that information.

In the end I've got my car back and didn't pay a penny.

Now stuck with the rattle noise and a windscreen washer fluid leak..

Maybe try somewhere like "A for Audi" instead of a Skoda main stealer? Or there used to be a taxi/private hire specialist in Glasgow who did mostly hacks and Skodas.

@Aakayamy Was this a Skoda Approved Used car with a Warranty you bought?

The T&C's there will need to exclude, Taxis, Private Hire, Couriers etc.

  • The Skoda Aprroved Extended Warranty with Car Care ltd used to and i used to warn buyers of that to read the T&C's.

EDIT.

Sadly you are stuffed there.   Unless you told the place you bought it from's salesperson that it was a Taxi you were buying it to use as.

But then a verbal is not worth the paper not written on.

Exclusions.

Yeah It was Skoda used approved car which I got from Telford Skoda. I bought extended warranty with it for another year as the current one was about to expire so I extended it for one more year.

the sales person in Telford Skoda assured me that the warranty will cover me for any parts and labour.

Would A for Audi cover me for warranty?

But, as roottoot mentioned, did you tell them it was going to be used as a taxi?

Yes I mentioned I was going to use the Skoda Octavia as a private hire taxi.

This might be a warning to overs but not a nice way for you to find out.

I have upset a taxi driver in the past saying that the car was their business and the warranty was covering a new car but not a used one.

They said their dealership did not care, sign off etc. and they no longer did the taxi runs.

Dealerships are not clear enough about cars they sell and warranties.

In Dundee when the cars got DPF's there were dealerships that had  buyers sign that they had explained to them the diesel might not be suitable for use as a Taxi.

These were white plate private hire cars on Lease and without meters and which might or might not be getting clocked.

Hint; they're not a Skoda stealer (or indeed a franchised stealership for any other make). I was trying to get your issues fixed for less than a main stealer would rook you.

Ok so I've had my local go to mechanic put car on the MOT RAMP again and he checked all suspensions and joints and confirms no play. I decided to get the wheel bearing on the front left changed as I felt it was the culprit with the humming noise I kept hearing when turning right in to streets. That's resolved that issue but the rattle remains.

He feels the front left driveshaft could be the issue as he took car for a drive with me and he felt every time he applied the brakes he was feeling the steering wheel vibrate and also heard a rattle at the front left wheel at same time.

He said it would either be the CV joint that connects to the driveshaft or it will be the driveshaft itself.

I called Skoda and they said the driveshafts for both side cost £528 Inc vat for the left and £518 Inc vat for the right. He said the CV joints are around £200 or so each.

Today I was working in the car doing my taxi work and I could hear humming and grinding and rattle at same time driving in a straight residential street and everytime I applied the brakes it was louder and also during acceleration.

This rattle only appears to happen when car is driven for 20 mins or so and it's continuous throughout till car is left parked for hours and it won't appear again till driven for over 20 minutes.

Do you guys feel that it could be the driveshaft or CV joint that could be the issue with what I mentioned above?

Can anyone recommend where is best to buy driveshafts other than the Skoda dealers?

Im still hearing a rattle and knocking and this weird groaning noise from the front left wheel when I'm about to come to a stop or if I go over any speed bumps and when turning right.

Every mechanic who has checked my car on the ramp can't see any play or any rubber seals damaged or split so keep saying to me all suspensions and driveshafts look good.

I'm convinced it could be a driveshaft issue. Not sure if it's best to buy a full driveshaft or if they come in parts.

Please help.

It's very rare for the problem to be the driveshaft, usually it's the CV joints.

I've just come back from another garage who had the car on the ramp. He couldn't see any issues with the suspension. He took the car for a drive and said nothing can be heard.

The sound I hear comes after a while driving the car and stays the whole night.

I asked about the CV joints and was told nothing can be heard.

When I go over speed bumps I hear it, when I do a full lock right turn I can feel grinding and soon as I've turned and go straight you hear a rattle.

Suppose no garage wants to remove the driveshaft and inspect it properly to inspect the CV joints and the driveshaft.

Garage mentioned it could be the DSG gearbox that's the issue but my question is why would it rattle and grind when going over speed bumps and doing a full lock right turn and how could that be a gearbox issue?

Are you certain it is not the back plate dust shield for the disc brakes?

I've had that checked few days ago when I got the front pads and discs changed and they seem to be perfect.

This rattle comes when car is proper reached its temperature and driven for least 5-10 miles and then you hear it.

Best check Exhaust / Cat / DPF shields,  or even the Core of the DPF or silencers.

?

The DPF has not been stripped out by any chance?

Mechanic checked all that as well. He looked at all the car.

Dpf never been touched before.

Read through loads of posts on the forum and to me it seems like inner transmission part of the driveshaft and also outside side CV joint of the driveshaft. Problem is you can't see any play or any damage on the rubber boots.

Is it best to have the driveshaft removed and check for any play?

The internals can't be seen through the boots so it's still possible to have some damage  or wear that you can't see.

Might be worth trying holding the driveshaft and trying to turn the road wheel while listening and feeling for any noise or play?

The mechanic done that and said he couldn't feel anything. I'm going to bite to bullet and just order a full driveshaft.

Will be travelling down to Bradford during the week so get someone there to change it.

Is NAPA driveshaft any good?

  • Author

That's me just had both sides of driveshaft changed. Got Napa make installed.

I just thought I'd let you all know that this has resolved my issue.

No more rattle and knocking and squealing noise.

Thanks to all members on this forum who has helped me.. 😊😊
