vRS Restoration/Upgrades

Featured Replies

I've recently bought a vRS '56 reg 106k miles.

I have started of with a big clean, full service, new timing belt and and EGR clean.

I think next to be done is a new set of tyres. Fronts are worn below 1.6 and rears have plenty of tread but are old. Tempted to put the rears on the front and buy new rears.

- Brakes are very worn on the rear and all disks are pitted so will need a full set of disks and pads.

Further Repairs needed:

- Front Driver window mechanism broken

- Rear washer hose major leak

- Driver Seat ripped

- Small radiator leak

- Rust spots on wheel arches, driver door and boot.

- Hand brake loose and suspecting not releasing properly causing wear when driving

- Details such as badges need replacing

- Alloy Refurb

Considering upgrades once all problems are sorted:

- Stage 1 remap with EGR delete (considering duel eco & sport map)

- 312mm Brake upgrade

- Poly bushing the sus

- Rear ARB

- Car Play/BT Radio

Any suggestions on good upgrades and where to go for parts will be greatly appreciated. Looking for low cost as I'm an apprentice :) .

Going for a stock look with good bang for buck performance upgrades.

Cheers

Also forgot to mention that I'm hoping to replace the head bolts with PD150 bolts and replace the gasket

Handbrake.... Can be the rear caliper(s) seizing. Best sorted out by freeing it off at the earliest opportunity or a new caliper or two will be required.

Can fit handbrake "helper" springs to the calipers to help them once free or if new.

Rad leak might be as simple as resealing a switch/sensor and/or changing the coolant.

Don't bother with the PD150 head bolts and gasket unless you know it's leaking.

Steering rack bush is a nice cheap mod that gives a bit more steering feel. I have the one superpro makes in 2 of mine and I felt it made a difference.

Pretty cheap iirc, think I payed just over £20.

Dogbone bush is a good one too, few options there depending on what you're looking for. Again pretty cheap, would run you £40-£50 for a powerflex one.

Turns out handbrake mechanism is realising fine, I think the pads are just severely warn. Managed to get a full set of tyres too so I’ll be doing the brakes (all disks and pads) next payday.

is it worth upgrading the brakes whilst I’m replacing the pads and disks?

It's pretty much the ideal time to upgrade to new 312mm discs on the front, you just need to buy the calipers and brackets, change all the brake fluid at the same time and replace the rear discs and pads but don't bother upgrading them.

312mm brakes can be found reasonably cheap on marketplace regularly.

Be wise to join some of the parts groups on Facebook because you'll find stuff on there often enough.

My car fairly recently ticked over 100k after 18yrs ownership. I decided to replace all springs & shocks. I suspected they were a bit worn for while but persisted with them (no leaks or even misting).  But due to a top mount advisory at the last MOT I thought now was a good time to replace. It had been on Eibach springs on std dampers within the first year or so (I've owned since new); this may have accelerated it's decline.

It was surprising how little damping the old shocks were offering.

New ST (by KW) kit, top mounts etc fitted and it's transformed it back. Peace of mind it was a good bit of preventative maintenance done. Fingerscrossed it'll last another 18yrs like the last set!

Worth considering?

Good shout that, posted this video a hundred times but it's of a shock from my mk1 fabia that was good and a shock from my mk2 fabia that was dead but had no misting or leaks same as you. Shock of the mk2 was in and around 104k miles iirc, original from 2012.

An outing to the Sally Gap is what finished them off.

I use mine more as a toy nowadays doing autosolos’s.

Remap? Personal thing but I’ve  now put mine back to stock.

Polly bush. Not for me. Squeaks do my head in when the grease wears out. I’d use stock bushes with seat Ibiza solid rubber console bushes.

rear anti roll bar. Yes. Either H&R or Jabbasport. I personally think the whiteline isn’t stiff enough.

Dampers. Stock will be well past it now, wasn’t great when new. I really like my bilstein B8’s. Maybe koni sport would be another option.

front camber. I use silverproject camber top mounts set to max camber which is almost 3 degrees. I put this in the same must have bucket as the rear anti roll bar.

Springs. Keep stock. With the above setup on eibach springs I was running out of suspension travel and bouncing off the bump stops.

brakes. I’m now back on stock from running 312’s. They have plenty of power.
