Use USB port below AirCon for charging

Featured Replies

Hello!

Is it possible to use the usb port below the air con for powering up a magsafe charger? Would like to hear some opinions before buying an adapter ( the charger is usbc)

I would borrow one first to try, the USB ports in my Passat charge my phone really slow, I have a feeling they are only 500mA so won't be any good for a wireless charger.

For a decent charge rate, especially with a wireless charger (which is less efficient than a wired connection) you will almost certainly need to use a USB adapter (preferably a USB-C one) plugged into the 12V socket.

Would that draw power when vehicle is turned off?  I was a fan of that usb port because I know it is not powered when car is turned off.

Yes. It's live all the time.

I've just learnt to unplug the USB adapter whenever I'm leaving the car for more than a few minutes.

It is, however, if you fancy your hand with some DIY wiring, you could wire up a 12v socket that is ignition controlled, with a piggyback fuse from the internal fusebox, there's one fuse in there that is ignition controlled, I believe there's a thread about dashcam installations that lists it. you could then run the wire to your charger whichever way you like.
