ABS Adjustment, how to do?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Looking to change my brake fluid using the proper method of brake bleeding for octavia 2016 2.0 diesel vrs. Workshop manual seems relatively straightforward and have also purchased VCDS to cycle the system per workshop manual after pressure refilling.

Can anyone help with the final workshop instruction, "carry out road test, while doing so at least one abs adjustment must be carried out on vehicles with ABS!"

I've come across stuff about after doing the fluid change try and get your abs to come on by driving on gravel/wet road however I'm assuming if I can get vcds to do that in effect by cycling the abs pump then the above step isn't what's been referred to in the manual?

Hope someone can help and hope its not been answered elsewhere, don't think I came across anything but any pointers would be good.

Cheers

You don't need VCDS for a basic fluid change (a pressure bleeder is very handy as pedal pumping is not ideal) only if air gets into the MC or pump. The "adjustment" is a bad translation, it means you must trigger the ABS by hard braking IN A SAFE place!

Thanks Crasher,

Yeah you're right about not needing vcds, I had either got that from the pre-bleeding procedure or for coolant flush as was reading those procedures at the same time and have got them mixed up.

Just wondering as well, under maintenance - change brake fluid - it tells you to drain the slave cylinder whereas under brakes - bleeding hydraulic system following standard procedure - it doesn't mention the slave cylinder.

Any help on which one or the difference between both methods?

And I had tried hard braking the other night on a wet road prior to changing fluid to see how easy it would be to trigger abs and wasn't able to trigger it so will maybe try gravel when it comes time, appreciate the proper translation!

Cheers!

Makes sense; the brakes and hydraulic clutch use the same reservoir for the hydraulic fluid. You normally bleed each slave/wheel cylinder individually following a fluid change.

As to triggering the ABS, braking for above 20mph on gravel, or a mixture of both. one on either side.

Hi,

Thanks, I think you've answered that for me.

I think I understand it now as the brake bleeding procedure under the brakes pages is different in that you're just removing the trapped air from calipers by means of traditional bleeding (with or without pressure bleeder) so don't need to necessarily remove all fluid whereas for the brake fluid change under -maintenance- you are removing all fluid, firstly from reservoir then drain from slave cylinder, my octavia variant has 4 calipers so subsequently bleed each one of the calipers.

If anyone has the repair manual maybe they could point me as to the correct sequence.

It reads as though you should

1) empty reservoir

2) drain slave cylinder

3) bleed rear right caliper

...

Then instructions jump to a box listing correct sequence and it's then listed as

1) front left 0.2l

2) front right 0.2l

3) rear left 0.3l

4) rear right 0.3l

5) slave cylinder 0.15l

It lists total volume for fluid to be bled out of a manual gearbox as 1.15 litres

So doesn't seem straightforward, on past cars I've done furthest away caliper and worked to closest and I'm sure that's the accepted method but trying to follow the manual here and not sure what the actual sequence is they are suggesting?

Okay so you need to be above 20mph then trigger abs? Manual just said at least once, so maybe twice?

Anyone actually done this and know if abs light needs to come on to be successful, I braked hard tonight on way home on wet road and felt the pedal pulsing but no abs light which is why I'm asking, also would switching traction off help?

Cheers.

Quite normal actions IME, and yes I do test my ABS from time to time.

The ABS light indicates a fault (and is tested on key on) so not coming on when ABS operates is correct.

Hello Everyone,

I am about to change a brake liquid on my Octavia and I have a Maintenance manual from 12.2014, which describes the process in details. But before going forward i decided to invest €7 and get up-to-date workshop procedures from Skoda.

The reason for doubts was a video on Youtube, where the official workshop by the dealer said that the sequence is changed, This video is in Russian and therefore I give no link.

I have chosen German language for documents as I wanted to avoid wrong translations.

I was surprised to see a big difference to 12.2014 in a bleeding sequence.

2014:

1. Slave cylinder (clutch)

2. Rear right

3. Rear left

4. Front right

5. Front left

Actual:

1. Slave cylinder (clutch)

2. Front right

3. Front left

4. Rear right

5. Rear left

As for the test drive, the actual German version says "Während einer Probefahrt muss bei Fahrzeugen mit ABS mindestens eine ABS-Regelung erfolgen", which means exactly what is in English version. No adjustment, Just extreme braking on gravy or slippery surface.

I have attached screenshots of both sequences for reference.
