Reversing in 4x4 mode, issues

Featured Replies

Hello

My Scout in Rough surface traction mode does something I am not certain is correct.

Firstly, let me say going forward the Haldex 4x4 & DSG works well and exactly as I would predict, but in reverse what appear to be simple ruts stop it taking up the drive.

As an example, I was going down a very steep narrow track which kept getting narrower so when I got to a place I could 3point turn I did. At this location there was a drainage channel across the road at a 30-degree angle. The channel was about 5cm deep with sloping sides. Something I'd not thought would be a problem. The front wheels came to rest in this channel during one of my many back & forths. Engaged R and pressed accelerator, lots of revs but no movement. I put it into normal drive mode & it reversed as normal.  This sort of behaviour has happened 2 other times. Once on a big tree root, another on a reverse up a steep bank.

Should I be asking the dealer to check anything? Anyone had similar experiences?

TIA

The dealer service manager has just given me a possible explanation, but he also didn't understand this.

The Haldex reacts to front wheel slip angles, so if the front wheels are not rotating no Haldex to operate.

His dealer training on the 4x4 didn't go to this depth but he considered the 4x4 is designed for forward movement only.

Hmm, not sure. I thought the car was mainly front wheel drive until it detects slip and then it activates the haldex to bring the rear drive train into play. So reversing I would expect the same to happen.

So I'm not sure why normal mode would help when off road didn't as I think off road more or less makes it more sensitive.

I wonder if it's a DSG issue with reverse when combined with off road mode.

There is also the option of turning tracking control off when you get stuck as that will allow some wheel spin to drag you out rather than the traction control cutting in and stops you going anywhere.

On the mk2 Octavia forum there was discussion a while back where it was revealed that the Haldex clutch only engaged when the right hand front wheel started to slip.  This is apparenly to deal with soft or greasy verges or snow runs on the offside of the vehicle for LHD cars.  This means that for RHD cars - where the same Haldex setup applies - that we won't get 4WD assist if our left hand front wheel loses traction.

I don't recall whether this was manual or auto and cannot comment on whether the 'feature' has continued into later models.

I dont think that can be the case Mike, there are many circumstances where either the NS or OS front wheel would slip before the other.

The Haldex coupling also pre-emptively engages in many situations, I often feel mine snatch as it releases when I drive out of a car parking space using left or right lock to clear the cars opposite, it is engaged in anticipation and then releases when no wheel slip is detected and also probably because I am driving very slowly (system does not know that it wasn't a junction i wanted to sprint across) but by that time there has been some transmission wind up, in other driving conditions I would be accelerating and not notice the wind up.

No movement but were there revs and wheelspin from wheels without traction? It sound like no so its not a case of the coupling not engaging (although it may well not have) but something preventing or limiting the drive torque, I believe you have an auto or DSG? With a manual you would know and feel exactly what was happening.

@DibDibScout welcome to the forum.

How many miles on your car now?

Has your Haldex had 1 or 2 services, and done properly?

At Dealerships it is not unusual for Service or sales staff to know nothing much about cars or features.  Or to just give out BS.

The model, age is often important regarding what does what and why.

Good points roottoot.

I bought it with 14k, it now has another 5k.

I did discuss this with the dealer service manager yesterday about adding it to the list on next service which I intend to bring much closer than the dash screen suggests.

And your point on, they don't know about them, is also true. See my post in the Hello forum.

But he and I have already outlined what will be added to normal oil change etc.

Will report back when done

Hi Dib, what year is it and is it still under the dealers warranty which means you need to have it serviced by them.

The reason I ask is that the skoda service of the haldex doesn't take the unit apart to clean the internal filter as they just change the oil. A good VW independent will take it apart and clean the internals ( skoda says the filter isn't part if the service although if you search the forum the pictures will show you how much it needs a good clean.

What confuses me know is the complete lack of drive you had which was resolved when you went into normal mode .... in off road were you conscious of any wheels spin or was it simply a case of engine revs and nothing else (as if it was out of gear). Thanks

No Warranty with Skoda requires a Main Dealership to do the Servicing to keep it valid.  It does need done correctly with the correct fluids by a VAT registered person and the record of that.  (Different story, grey area and all with a pinch of salt.)

It is as well if there is a Warranty to have a Main Dealer carry out the Haldex Service and if their Fully Trained or half trained factory technicians mess up things are easier to discuss.

Not that a Skoda Main Dealer doing a Haldex Service means it is done correctly.  Or that they know what might be required other than the fluid, they say there is nothing else quite often.

Again, thanks for the relevant info.

It's going to the official dealer I bought it from as it has their own warranty and guarantee which I will be holding them to.

Also, I want to keep the records correct and sequential and the 'ownership' of the problem with the same people.
