Interesting Service Quote?

Featured Replies

Hello all

Just received my car a couple of weeks ago and i'm looking to get it pretty much everything serviced as I think not everything has been done as required and I would like to stay on top of things.

For context I have a 2017 (Facelift) Octavia VRS 245 Estate

I just got of the phone with a Skoda service adviser, I was quoted around £800 for:

DGS service

Haldex diff oil change

Oil change with extended scope (the car does have a service plan but I was told parts like fuel, air filter are not covered in the cost?)

And a cam belt replacement is due???

Im not too sure about the cambelt as I thought I didn't have one ahaha, maybe they can retro fit this hahaha.

the cam belt change was quoted at £500 so the other work should only cost around £300

Does the £300 seem reasonable and when is the diff due a service as looking through the service history shows nothing being done nor with the DSG.

Sorry for going on, just planing on keeping the car for a long time so want to make sure it holds on for that time.

Thanks in advance.

If that 800 genuinely includes DSG, haldex, cambelt and the various filters I would bite their arms off. Especially as you are getting a service "included" with the plan.

I'd be worried about a place that doesn't know the engine - I thought the VRS245  had the EA888 cam chain petrol engine?

What was done at past services, what miles now and since last service.

Maybe find a good independent if the Service Plan requires being ripped off on extras.  Service as the vehicle requires.

If the Service Plan is Oil & Inspection Service and next time Oil & Inspection & Extended Scope then let them do that Servicing and tell them to not do anything that costs extra.

If the car has not got Haldex then is it a VAQ service. (that is at the front not the rear) ?

VAQ £100 +  @ 3 years / 30,000 miles.

DSG £220 @40,000 miles,

Oil & inspection Service maybe £185

Extended Scope £65 @ 3 years then each 2.

Brake fluid maybe £65 @ 3 years then each 2 years.

Pollen Filter £35  Rip off.  Do it yourself.

Air Filter £45   Rip Off. Do it yourself.

In Blue is 2021 fixed prices cars 3-10 years old. @ participating dealers....  Pi55 taking.

Ask them to do cam belt ,then laugh at them when they cant find one .

Seen as your car is a TSI 2.0 it wont have a cambelt to start with :D

Regarding the prices youve been quoted, here are some of what i charge in north london with online service history all updated to match;

I charge £150 for a DSG service on the 6spd

For an oil change using all genuine parts £90

Pollen filter is charged at cost price depending on what one but between £10-15 normally

Haldex i charge £90 for with a filter clean

You are correct that things like fuel filter, air filter are not covered by the plan but the petrol vehicles do not have a servicable fuel filter and the air filter again I charge only what it costs as its a few minute job and genuine is normally around £10.

Remember, the prices ive put above are what I charge but I dont have the same overheads as a dealer so cant offer you a cup of tea or a sofa to sit on :D

Hopefully these prices give you a bit of an understanding, but take it with a pinch of salt, dealers and garages will generally be more expensive than me.

I retract my first reply. I should learn to pay attention to what the car is. Had it actually had a cambelt and rear diff it would have been a good deal.

As per roots usually sound servicing advice. Find a good local indy and go that route.

I think I was on the phone to a young lady, after  I asked questions she never knew the answer and had to double check for a min or two, guessing she was still very new and in training or something.

So having a deep look into the service history shows that at around 40000miles (currently at 55k) the VAQ was recommended but not done. DSG looks like it's not been done at 4 years but the spark plugs and everything else has been done. I mean I think it's worth doing the service with extended scope with them as it's free and doing the air filters myself as you said. But would you say do the VAQ and DSG with them also?

What you can't offer a cup of tea??? unacceptable 😂

I find it very funny about the cambelt. funny how much they know about their job sometimes. I will definitely consider this!!!

One thing I do wonder is that in a couple of the service history sheets the car comes up as the diesel with the Haldex so i'm wondering if that's the case on the info they are seeing at their end with the reg maybe??? Only on 1 or 2 occasions this was shown.

So the dsg has never been done. To me that says one of two things (if it's 7speed):

A) The dealer doesn't know the difference between we or dry 7 speed boxes. The dealers I've gone to treat all wet boxes the same with a service at 40k.

ii) For one thing they do know what they are doing as the later 7 speeds are 80k miles. Still no harm in getting it done early as 55k isn't trivial and you said you wanted a clean slate.

DQ381 7 speed Wet Clutch DSG Recommendation, guidelines or even schedules for oil changes are at 80,000.

Up to owners if the want to do sooner.

As to VAQ, i would get an Independent to do it, but if the car has Warranty Cover the VAQ should have been serviced to the Manufacturers Specification , recommendations, guidelines or schedules which Skoda Main Dealers / Approved repairers seem to ignore.

So if there is a warranty have a main dealer service it and then if they mess up it is on their head.

Th servicing of DSG's are not by years.

Just something to add. The filter is NOT part of the guidelines for replacement at 80k on the DQ381. I personally believe this is because the filter is slightly awkward to get to and the dealer cant be bothered. Make sure if you get it done elsewhere they are also changing the filter.
