Brake upgrade again…Help please.

Featured Replies

I have been trawling through through the web looking for info on upgrading the front end brakes. Car is only used for track days.

Using standard callipers, Tarox discs and Ferodo DS2500 pads at the moment which are okay but could do with more bite as pedal pressure at speed becomes excessive.

I have a set of lcr 4 pot callipers to go on, nothing else.

What will I need? I assume I may need a pair of adapters for the callipers and larger discs.

Any suggestions, links or maybe someone has something at home they don’t need…

Thanks.

The "off the shelf" common ones are Golf 4 R32 if you can find them and Leon 1 Cupra R BUT these need factory Cupra R 18's as nothing (in my experience) aftermarket will go over them. I still have a full setup all rebuilt under my bench done in RAL Mint Green so the next time I change my wheels, I can try and find some that will work. The current ones from Autec were listed as being for a Cupra R but they would not fit over the calipers.

I have the LCR callipers already. Will these fit with the existing discs?

Will I need larger discs?

Will I need some sort of conversion bracket to bolt the LCR four pots on?

I have aftermarket 17 inch wheels at the moment with plenty of room and hope that these may fit over the LCR callipers.

wheel-size.com lists 17" wheels for the Cupra R which uses the 323x28mm front brake discs. However, the Seat parts catalogue shows two different types of front brake calipers that are used with these size discs. The Brembo front brake calipers are listed as 18" on the Skoda parts catalogue, so they would appear to need at least 18" rims.

I will put it on the ramp next week, remove a wheel and calliper and offer up the 4 pot and see where we are going with this. They may fit under these Wolfram Pro-Lite wheels...

Wheel fitment aside, you'll definitely need the larger discs and the right pads for the caliper/carrier.

Have you tried any other pads than the DS2500s?

Yes, Hawk HP+ pads. Very good imho.

No they won't fit behind Pro-Lits, that is what I had before the Alutec which Wolfrace listed for the Cupra R but they still won't fit. The Leon Cupra R came with 18's usually although 17's are listed with 312 ATE calipers but the Brembo's will not work inside a 17 with the 328x28 Brembo calipers and discs.

Thanks for that.

I don’t want to lose the wheels, so will have to give it some thought.

Spacers!

Spoiler

I wouldn't want to run spacers.

@phazed - wonder if it's worth improving cooling to the front brakes and/or trying some better pads? You could take a look at some more track-focused forums to see what the latest recommendations are for trackday pads.

The existing calipers fitted with Ferodo DS2500 pads are surprisingly good.

I bought my 4 pot Brembo brake calipers on a whim but I am now not sure whether to fit them.

I am at Brands Hatch tomorrow so will concentrate more on the brake performance and take it from there.
