Regen Cycle on Tdi engine

Featured Replies

Just wanted to get the collective thoughts on the frequency to expect the Regen cycle to run on the engine (2.0Tdi 190HP) Mine seems to run almost every day but I am currently just doing short trips to pick up the kids. If the region is running too often is it ok or an indictor for something else ?

If it is running every day you have a problem, it either needs a good long run or a "service regeneration whilst standing" using a diagnostic system. If you leave it the DPF will clog and need a "forced regeneration whilst driving" which takes longer (i.e. costs more) and leave it past that where the soot loading exceeds the max value, the DPF will have to come off and be cleaned BUT they can also crack and that gets really expensive.

Your car needs an actual regen, doing just short journeys and not completing a cycle is not only diluting the oil with fuel but blocking the dpf further.

to do a regen simply take the car for a 30 minute drive at motorway speeds. Anyone that says ‘drop a gear and keep the revs high’ and all that rubbish… ignore it. The car is perfectly capable of carrying out its own regen at whatever rpm you do at motorway speeds. It will put additional load on the engine to assist by turning on ac, heated windows and such and this is all part of the process. No need for driver intervention other than a longer continuous drive

Interestingly enough when my car does a regen and I notice I’ll head for the nearest motorway and it stays in 5th on my DSG, when it goes into 6th I know it’s finished
