Superb 3 rear final drive

Featured Replies

Hi, my skoda rear diff died, i am changing it for used diff. Do i need to use computer afterwards to take old soft from diff unit and download it to new one? If it is needed, then how is it done?

Yes you will need to.

Are you swapping for a like for like? Exact same part numbers.

if so you should just run replace module procedure on odis so that way the correct dataset, parameters, Software and coding are all there.

And did the diff die… or the haldex?

Yes, all the numbers are same, but my car is superb 2.0 tsi, the diff is from tiguan 2.0 tdi, exactly same and haldex ecu is also same

It seems, that haldex died, but havent taken it part yet, still need to but diff back and someday i will take old diff apart to see.

Sorry for my english, problem seems to be where the fisrt end touches differ. Rear end of diff seems to work fine but rear end wont have rotation all the time on full circle. First end gets stuck when turning. New one turns the back end all the time in full circle.

Why not repair the haldex system?

Its not a massive job in the scheme of things, new clutch basket with plates, new pump and a really good clean up.

Dont have tools to get the differ level for putting it back together, need to take part the whole thing, clutch is built inside the differ.

Where i live there isnt any good acsess for these reapair elements and i need to get the car going again, new diff has 30k kilometers in it, so easy 100k before the same trouble begins and i am not sure, that only clutch got damaged, the boise was really bad before i took it apart.

Noise will not be the Haldex coupling but the differential gears and bearings, your description allowing for it being in a second language sounded like that.

Had someone changed the Haldex oil not long before the noise started by any chance?

  • Author

Yes, noise started about 2-3k kilometers after the change but at first it sounded like wheel bearing and it got worse, some times after i heard differential gearsmaking noise at starting and stopping driving, so at really low speed there was metal noise

Whoever did the Haldex service has drained your differential of oil and not the Haldex fluid.

You wont need to strip the diff to find out what has happened, it is toast, you were unlucky that it failed so quickly, I hope for your sake it was done by a garage and you have some recourse.

I made the mistake despite checking very carefully and having a second experienced pair of eyes (I'm partially sighted) I was really really lucky because I had driven over 400 miles with no diff lubrication, the last 200 on UK motorways and French autoroutes at 70/80 mph and heavily laden, that was when the noise became apparent.

I filled the diff with oil and parafin, ran it for 10 miles, flushed it and did the same again, the few drops of oil that came out were black and carbonised, I refilled with the correct oil and have since driven 40K miles over close to 3 years, its noisy but no worse than it was, I am tempting fate by saying so but I dodged a bullet.

These differentials are incredibly strong and reliable, just look at the abuse mine survived, whenever I read of a failure it has always been preceeded by a haldex fluid change where the wrong drain plug is used, it's very easily done and if you did not know otherwise you would swear that it was the correct drain plug.

Thank you for infomasion.

This is likley, but do you know is the 60k kilometers service good or should it be 30k? I am going to do it myself now, but i want to know that how often should i do it.

The diff i got has 30k on it so i can keep it good and working and it cost me 1100 euros and some days work.

I checked the paperwork from that service and on paper there are haldex oil and haldex clutch fluid. 1 liter oil what is about right and 0,4 liter clutch fluid. I dont know if they really did it.

Work was done in skoda service and they said that 2015-2017 these diff are going to broke down about 150k kilometers but the newer years dosent have that issue anymore. I know that they actually changed something in the diff or clutch and the new ones are better. There is little part number marking that changed.

Really what needs clearing up is, was the Haldex Serviced and given a oil change and clean out,

& also the Rear Diff which is a different thing, different drain hole. different oil.

I missed the first k in 2-3k kms and mistakenly thought the problem happened within 2kms.

If you drove 2-3000 kms before having any problem it is unlikely that they drained the diff oil by mistake.

So just bad luck.
