Windscreen cracking

I've just had a windscreen cracked - the second time in less than six months of owning my Superb. Both times it was a stone chip on a motorway, nothing obvious to be throwing up stones, not near a bridge. Apart from one easily repaired chip, I don't think I've ever had a windscreen crack in upwards of 500,000 miles in various cars.

Is this just bad luck or is there some "feature" that makes the windscreen more vulnerable in the current generation?

We hadn't used our Karoq much before we wnt on holiday on 22nd June. On the way to Folkestone (or maybe the day before) we had a message about a software update, which I accepted. I rarely use the ACC as I don't like the way it manages speed, and since just after we got it, I managed to switch off the ACC, and just use it as cruise control. For the past few weeks my Skoda Scala Infotainment unit has been prompting me to do updates. Almost everyday I get the prompt to do an update. I only get the one prompt in a day. I believe the procedure is to park, accept the update, turn off the ignition, exit the car and lock it. I think some updates only apply when you next start the car.
