Buying advice - 1.8 TSI

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I’m currently looking at an estate to replace my non-ULEZ compliant 3 series and have come across the Octavia Scout. I can’t go for the diesel as I live within the proposed expanded ULEZ zone.

I’ve found a local tidy 1.8 TSI CDAA engined 2009 / 59 Scout on 65k miles and only when searching did I come across the sticky thread here regarding the 1.8 TSI and how it’s a ticking time bomb for timing chain and piston rings.

Is it really a case of just completely avoiding a Gen2 TSI? It seems a shame as the rest of the car seems ideal.

Is the timing chain issue resolved completely by replacing the chain and installing the latest available tensioner?

The oil consumption issue - are there any tell tale signs that I’d be able to tell if this particular example suffers from it or not?

Anything else I should be looking out for on a Mk2 Octy Scout?

Cheers

Nick

Yes. On the timing chain

If its replaced you should be able to rely on another 60k miles maybe 100k miles.

No on scraper rings. Early stages hard to tell. Driving 1000 miles best test. Plugs and oil spill around filer tell tale signs but unreliable to diagnose...

I am interested in following the responses here too. Looking at a Yeti with the same engine iteration!

Part of me really hopes that the horror stories are more common because the engine is more common. Bad ones still being a small minority.

What did you end up doing?

Yeah they're real alright. Have advised on heaps of threads on here and by PM, even outside those failure threads.

There are countless threads on here where people have purchased a used car with the gen 2 ea888 and after a month of driving realise it is drinking so so much oil. If they're lucky, and they bought it from a dealer who's still contactable, they get most or nearly all of their money back. Apart from the lost sleep, worrying and wasted time which they live with.

But first the dealer will tell them about the warranty and inspect car, and fill up oil delaying things. You can easily find yourself out of the statutory refund window, causing more uncertainty.

Do not buy one of these privately unless your grandmother is selling it to you. Even then, look her in the eyes!!

Thank you both for your speedy replies! I have continued to read into this with your prompts and will be ruling this engine version out now. I've been a bit unlucky with cars in the past (even though I'm meticulous when it comes to maintenance) and by the sounds of this it's more sinister than a "roll of the dice" situation!

Is the 1.4tsi the best of the petrol engines then? And is this the best of a bad bunch, or has it generally proven to be a reliable engine?

I'm really keen on the Yeti and think it'll fit into our lives well. We've ruled out diesels as will be doing predominantly short trips.

Thanks again for your help.

Maybe open another thread for the 1.4 tsi. I think it was OK but get some replies with more experience in that engine series.

There are 1.4 TSI threads in the Yeti section.

Look at the Sunroof issues when considering a Yeti with one.  Plenty recent threads on that as well.

In this section there are threads in the past months asking about the excellent 1.4 TSI's.

Older Yeti threads.
