Rhythmic clunk

Featured Replies

Got a mk1 2006 Vrs that developed a clunk when almost full lock, it seems to happen at a certain point of rotation of the wheel. I’ve checked wheel for play and no splits on inner cv boots has left me baffled ?

Just because the boot's intact doesn't mean the joint itself isn't worn.

Rhythmic clunk at full lock sounds like badly worn CV joint to me.

Good point it’s just odd it only makes the noise at a certain point of the rotation

That could suggest just one of the balls has flat-spotted - or one track is damaged. Is this noise audible on both locks, worse on one lock than the other, or just on one?

From my Mk1-2 Mini days, louder noise on one lock indicated wear damage to the joint on the inside of the turn IIRC.

It’s only making noise when turning right, it starts just before full lock and seems to make the noise at a certain consistent point on the revolution. It’s like a mechanical slapping noise if that makes sense 😳

That does sound like a failing CV joint, although I've usually heard it as more of a click (clunk with more wear) each revolution. Are you sure there is no part of a tyre touching part of the suspension?

I suggest making a close inspection the RH CV joints. Do you have a trusted garage?

I’ve had a quick look, started after fitting the braided lines at front, but might not have noticed it before. I’ve recently replaced both drop links and I’ve done a cv before, it’s just not 100% consistent with what I would expect from a cv I’ll have a closer look tomorrow
