Towbar Wiring / Coding

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I purchased a towbar and dedicated wiring kit for my 2.0 diesel hatchback Octavia online and between Friday and yesterday, I fitted it. The fitting of the towbar itself was fine, but the wiring was definitely trickier, mainly due to access. I got there though (I'm fairly confident it's been done correctly, I took my time and while I'm not a car mechanic, I am a mechanic by trade) and turned the ignition on to check the trailer lights. All the lights are working as they should, however I have some warning messages on the screen: "Error: start-stop system", "Error: stabilisation control (ESC)", and "Error: Tyre Pressure Monitoring System". These were not present before I started.

I had a look online and realised I needed to code this into the car. Fortunately I have VCDS from a previous VW ownership, so I dusted it off, found the guide on this forum https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/299424-octavia-iii-vcds-adaptations-tried-and-tested/page/2/ and worked through it. All went well, apart from the Park/Steering Assist module which presented me with, "Coding Rejected. Error 33: Security Access Required". Any idea how to deal with this?

The error warnings are all still present, and I fear they will not be resolved by coding the Park/Steering module, but I may be wrong. What are people's thoughts? I have attached an Auto Scan both before and after I coded what I could. I have tried clearing the codes but they come immediately back.  For those who don't want to look at the Auto Scan, I have listed the main codes below.

17158 - Databus

7150 - Implausible Data Received from Steering Angle Sensor Module (G85)

0297 - Steering angle sensor

16390 - Display for Tire Pressure Monitoring

13637426 - Databus

66304 - Databus

16135 - Steering Angle Sensor

I would really appreciate any help you folks can give here.

What exactly were you trying to "code into the car"

On the assumption that you disconnected the battery to do the wiring then all the error warnings that you reported are completely normal and to be expected, they would all disappear after driving a short distance.

Is your "dedicated wiring kit" one that connects to the existing wiring loom connector including the twisted pair of Canbus wires or is it a low impedance bypass relay?

If you look at the post titled 'How to code official towbar electrics' in this thread (https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/299424-octavia-iii-vcds-adaptations-tried-and-tested/page/2/), you can see exactly what I did and meant when I said "code into the car".

Ah, I haven't driven the car out of the garage yet, so I'll certainly have to try that tomorrow then!

My "dedicated wiring kit" is indeed one that connects into the existing loom, including the can bus wires. It is not a bypass relay.

Turn the steering wheel lock to lock then report back if it clears some of the codes :)

Ok, update.

Drove the car out of the garage and turned the steering lock to lock a few times. The ESC and the Tyre Pressure warnings disappeared but not the Start/Stop warning. I turned the car off and on again, and now the Start/Stop warning was gone too. Happy days!

I was also able to code the Park/Steering Assist module, turns out that I just needed to go into the Security Access section first, hover the mouse over the box and VCDS provided the correct security code. After inputting that code I was then able to change the coding as required.

Thanks for everyone's help, I appreciate it.

Well done, I can understand the problems you had, I find VCDS incredibly badly written and counter-intuitive in many areas, also using wrong units, positive instead of negative etc etc, I don't know if its Rosstech or VAG to blame but it makes it hard to use and you end up doubting and second guessing everything.
