Info system not recognizing new abum addition to USB SD card

Featured Replies

OK, having tried everything I give up on this one and hope that someone here knows the answer.

I've done only 4K miles in my new Scala.  On Day one I loaded around a dozen of my favourite CD albums from my PC onto an SD card, plugged the card into the car and presto - it all worked beautifully, including displaying album art, and has done up to this day.

I recently decided to put some of my old vinyl LPs on the car SD card so I got a USB turntable, ripped the LPs off in MP3 format and loaded them onto the car SD card in exactly the same way as all the other albums already there.  The 'properties' of my new LP addition folders show exactly the same as all the other existing folders on the SD card.

But none of the new LP albums show on either the 'Artist' list or the 'Album' list in the car.  All the individual tracks of the new albums are there in the 'Track List' listing and can be played from the 'Track List'

I've formatted the SD card in case the info system puts some kind of marker on it to hide new additions, reloaded all the albums existing and new from my PC, but still only the original albums show in the 'Albums' and Artists' list and not the new LP ones.

So I've given up on this and hope that there's an answer out there which someone can help with.

Thanks...........

You probably need some software to tag the Artist and Album name into the files you made from LP to MP3 rips.

I am not sure if VLC player can add these, I know you can view them.

Ok, you can edit the media information with VLC, what a win.

Ah that's an interesting thought, thanks, I'll try going via VLC player.

Just updated my post, it can work for tagging.

p.s. There will be apps that can bulk tag the album, but you can at least verify with existing albums on your SD Card, and compare your LP Rips.

Yes I've just done that.  Loaded one of the LP albums into VLC and laboriously typed in the artist and album title to every track in the field you show in your post.

.

After doing that, loaded the LP tracks into the csr SD card again but still not showing on the info system album or artist lists.  Individual tracks are on the track list.

Having typed the metadata in on VLC do you have to then save the tracks back to the source?   I can;t find a way to do that in VLC.

Was you working off the SD Card files when using VLC to edit information?

What is the album you are trying to fix?

It looks like I need to use something like MP3tag to get this done, so I'm about to give that a try.

Thanks for your help - much appreciated.

I am sure there will be a tool like that, nothing better than bulk metadata editing.

OK, just loaded the files of my LP rip from the SD card into MP3tag and bulk tagged all the tracks with artist/album title etc.

Still not showing in the car.  Took a closer look and there is one difference between my LP ripped tracks and all the others on the SD card - my LP tracks are showing a PCM CODEC whereas every other track is showing an MPEG CODEC.

This si something I don;t understand - I'm out of my depth here.  Is this the probelm and if so how do I convert the CODEC?

What was the album?

Codecs are the compression types.  If you try to swap one lossy codec to another, you may loose even more detail (sound crappy)

The album I'm doing all this with is Cat Stevens Teaser And The Firecat but I've ripped a load of my vinyl collection and was hoping to get them into the car but I'm stuck on this.

If the CODEC doesn't make a difference to the album being recognized by the car then I don't know what's stopping these ripped albums being recognized.  All the tags are now the same as the albums that are recognized.

Very frustrating!

I believe Audacity which is free to download and use will help you convert your PCM files to MP3 which is more easily able to be tagged in a way that your head unit understands.  PCM can be tagged but I doubt the Skoda unit can read the method used. Hope this helps although I'm sure someone will be along with more info.

OK Thanks, I'm familiar with Audacity.

I'm a musician and I use the Reaper DAW to do my recordings rather than Audacity but I don't see how that would work.

I have a vinyl album ripped using EZ Vinyl Tape Converter to 10 separate tracks so If I use 'Import Media File' in Reaper (or Audacity) I can only do one track at a time and render it to MP3.  So to do the whole album would be a labour of love for sure!

It's worth doing a couple of tracks though to see if the CODEC is the problem here, and thanks for the tip to try it - I didn't think of that.

Dbpoweramp does batch conversion but is not free

Just to draw a line under this thread in case anyone else has the same problem........

It seems to have been a combination of things. I used the on-line facility 'freeconvert.com/wav-to-mp3' to bulk convert all the ripped tracks to MP3 and then used the free download MP3tag to tag all the tracks with artist, album and track titles,   Then, crucially it seems, I formatted the car SD card and copied all my original music folders which I have stored on PC and the newly ripped, converted and tagged music folders back onto the car SD card and all were then recognized by the infosystem and play perfectly.

Thanks for all the help and advice along the way - much appreciated.

Hi Morvargh,

I'm just wondering if your car (I also have a Scala) does what mine does sometimes.  It randomly resets the play list and starts at the first track again, and again.  And yes, I have it set to play the tracks randomly.   I don't mind the first track, but it gets frustrating.

Hi cwt,

The infosystem in my Scala has some strange and unusual quirks, but not that one.

It will sometimes repeat the track when I haven't set it to repeat, it will sometimes report 'ERROR FILE' instead of listing the tracks, but when this happens it still plays the tracks when the play arrow is pressed and finally sometimes it just won't load the SD card at all.

I much preferred the infosystem in my old Fabia, but hey, that's progress!

I own a SKODA  KAMIQ  2023 with two USB-C ports.  Here is how you can create & play a custom playlist, using a USB stick connected to the usb-C port through a USB-C male to USB-A female connector.

Lets say there are 5 songs written in the usb stick :  song1.mp3, , , , , song5.mp3.    *** ONLY ENGLISH alphabet letters are allowed in the song filenames ***

Lets say that you want to create a playlist with this playing order :  song3.mp3,  song1.mp3,  song4.mp3,  song2.mp3,  song5.mp3.

Open notepad (windows) and in an empty file put the following text :

<?wpl version="1.0"?>
<smil>
    <head>
        <meta name="Generator" content="Microsoft Windows Media Player -- 12.0.19041.1865"/>
        <meta name="ItemCount" content="5"/>
        <title>MyPlaylist</title>
    </head>
    <body>
        <seq>
            <media src="
song3.mp3"/>

            <media src="song1.mp3"/>

            <media src="song4.mp3"/>

            <media src="song2.mp3"/>

            <media src="song5.mp3"/>

        </seq>
    </body>
</smil>

Save the file as "MyPlaylist.wpl" and copy it to the USB stick.

Keep in mind that :

-the filename of the playlist must be the same as the name in the 6th line of the above text   <title>MyPlaylist</title>

-the number of songs in the list must be equal to the number in the 5th line of the above text  :   <meta name="ItemCount" content="5"/>

-ONLY ENGLISH alphabet letters are allowed in the song filenames and inside this .wpl file.

Even one non-english letter will make the playlist unreadable!!

Connect the USB stick, and from the media menu  load the playlist MyPlaylist.wpl, and that's it!!!

Enjoy!!!

I'll give this a whirl when I have a few minutes to get my head round it.  I'll have a few more than 5 songs, may by 1000 times so will have to come up with a way of creating a random way of creating the list.

To be honest, I don't give a stuff what order they are in, just that the list isn't reset and goes back to the first song every time I get in the car.

When the playlist operates correctly,  every time you start the engine, the palylist starts from the song that was playing when you stopped.

I also noticed that USB-C 1 in my car cannot read .wpl files,  while USB-C 2 can !!!!

Skoda should spare a page in the car manual for these details....

Hey,

Interesting old topic dredged up through the search.

Last week I posted this to my Fabia board but so far have had no responses.

Maybe someone here might know.

Wondering if anyone can shed light on the system of file structure for using a USB flash drive to play albums.

I'm finding that, on selecting an album from the file browser, the tracks seem to come up in alphabetical order instead of the actual play order that was saved to the disc.

I have all files actually numbered at the beginning of each title, such as ....  01_TrackOne ... or    02_TrackTwo

but can't find a way to select play order anywhere in the settings or menu.

In my previous car (Kia Picanto) I had the same issue but there were settings that could be changed to revise the play order.

The other associated issue I'm finding is that, for each track (or album) I have artwork saved in the MP3 tag but only SOME of these are showing on the screen.

Does anyone know if there is a specified required file type/size that will display naturally?

Again, nothing to find in the settings or online manual.

This is all for the Swing version of head unit.

Thanks.
