Dead 2.0 FSI petrol - any ideas?

Hi all,

 

Our 2.0 FSI Petrol (as per my sig) suddenly stopped while driving tonight.

 

The yellow engine light has been on for a while, but no noticeable loss of power until tonight of course!

 

Luckily it was only a mile from home as we had to wait 4 1/2 hours for the RAC's contractor to turn up

 

He thought what I did initially: a broken cambelt, at it's spinning fast on the starter with no compression

 

But I'd already taken the inspection cover off, and the cambelt is still there and looks intact, and everything's turning as expected

 

He was very puzzled, but couldn't recover it, so we have another 5 or so hours to wait for the recovery!

 

Any ideas?

No input just a question...why drive around with engine management light on and wait for engine to detonate.

Your timing belt has jumped one or more teeth on the pulleys, or one pulley has slipped back one or more teeth, peu importe, the end result is the same, the valves have come into contact with the pistons and given the age of your vehicle its probably an uneconomic repair

Turning but not with the correct synchronisation.

 

It is likely that you had a warning that this could happen by the check engine light, the fault code would most likely have been for the camshaft position sensor out of sync with the crankshaft position sensor indicating that the timing belt had jumped initially one tooth, not enough to cause piston/valve interference but if you were to carry on driving................................

I checked with a reader, basic one but it does have VW on the menu, and the RAC guy checked, and there were no engine codes

 

I also checked when the engine light first came on, no engine codes then either

 

I thought the engine light was for exhaust gas recirculation, although I'm obviously mistaken!

 

Yes, cam belt jumping was my thought, and yes it'll be uneconomic to fix

Compression test on each cylinder, check for sparks, check for fuel in fuel rail. Each one of those will narrow down the issue.
