I read somewhere that driving your car in eco mode is not good for engine???? why?

Going to be tougher to speculate why someone else said/wrote what they did: did they not elaborate? If not then I’d not pay too much attention to it. Otherwise it might be some misguided thing about petrol being used to idle the engine in eco mode rather than an engaged clutch meaning no petrol is needed to turn the engine over. I’d say the phallacy about that is the fact the latter has more resistance and the car will slow quicker - whereas it runs on longer in Eco. But whether it’s true or not I don’t know. It’s probably more complicated with dependant conditions etc but probably not as easy as a one-liner to say one method is good or bad.

 

Where did you read it? Some article somewhere?

@t13nyrIs it a manual or DSG TDI you have? 

 

No idea why anyone would suggest ECO mode being good for an engine.

I can't remember where I read it but they said it wasn't good for the gearbox...mine is a 6 speed DSG. I like it in eco its more laid back and it suits my daily driving been a taxi driver and if I ever need to put my foot down I just pull the lever back into S and off I go ;)

@t13nyr. Further to the other thread on engine oil changes.   Your DSG needs an oil change every 40,000 miles.  So it should have been done twice by now and will be due at 120,000 miles.  About £200, depending were you go.  Maybe £220 at a main dealer. 

  Taxi drivers should know who is who for finding a trusted mechanic.

 

You have a DQ250 DSG.

Oh that eco mode - changes up early and lower revs putting more strain on bottom end of engine, maybe that translates to different stresses through the gearbox shafts? Could speculate all day tbh. 
 

Think it’s perfectly fine for cruising/flowing along, I tend to flick it to sport when getting to junctions so the car responds in a decent gear and then back to E/D afterwards.

Thanks toot.....like I said I have just had gearbox oil and filter changed and also engine oil and filter changed by a reputable garage who specialise more in gearboxes.

I will probarbly change the gearbox oil once a year and 3/4 for engine ....If I stay on Private Hire! I came over from been a black cab driver because the new LEVC hybrid cabs are too much money and are not really productive enough. PCP £230 a week HP £300 a week over 60 months 

If a tool of the trade and doing 500-700 miles a week the once a year makes absolute sense for servicing the DQ250. 

 

I have an EV and meet Hybrid Taxi drivers all the time in the Edinburgh area at charging hubs.

They make money, save money.

 

My pal started the EV Taxi trade in Dundee. He had Silver Mercs that drivers hired and is the reason now that Dundee is Electric City.

Because of what he did the council got their back ends moving and got the money in from the EU, as Dundee always has. Hands out, take what is on offer.

 

Sadly he has past away.

My money is on people not understanding that the DSG coasting =/= depressing the clutch in a manual.

 

There are circumstances where low revs= oils starvation, but I doubt that in modern engines designed for it.

 

I don't buy that it means more torque being demanded at low revs means more harm, it'll drop down a gear if it needs to.

 

The italian-tuneup idea - sometimes engines need a thrash - that's not ad odds with being in eco mode most of the time.

 

You could argue equally that a lower life-time total of cycles/revolutions would make for a longer lasting engine 

Work vehicles.

 

2.0 TDI 150 ps DSG non SCR perfect Taxi / Private hire car in non low emission zone areas / cities.

 

280 AWD DSG's, maybe Airport Transport / Weddings / Events etc.   

 

Apples and pears,. location location location.   You use as you need, and the beauty is you can drive them as you want.

 

PS.

Black / AWD's. 

Maybe Funeral cars in winter.  Private Ambulance's etc for moving coffins. 

 Silver can be dual use,  Wedding or Funeral. 

White no good for funerals.

Out of curiosity toot......Does a skoda iv have a dpf filter?

Plus: When you have used all your electric up, what sort of mpg does the 1.4tsi get? and how many electric miles do you reckon you would get around town?

 

 

Any TSI will have a GPF from around 2018.  (In the EU /UK)

and that will be the same with a iV / PHEV with a 1.4 TSI.  So a Gasoline Particulate Filter.

 

A silent iV is certainly better at a wedding or funeral than a diesel.  Well IMO.

Those with iV / PHEV's will know the answer to miles.    Mixed use, hybrid / electric use.

Is it maybe only 25 miles from a charge in not too cold weather?

One last question before I get out of your hair.....does mine have a cam belt or chain and when do they need changing.

A Cam belt.

According to Skoda UK / Dealerships it was probably due a replacement last year, and the water pump also. 

 

Is there no history of it being done?

The only thing that tells me anything is a load of stickers by the drivers door. I will take a pic and show you.

Have you tried them to get the Service History, what done and when last?

It’s speculative as to whether the OP’s quote was making that point, but higher torque at lower revs has always been associated with more stress on the bottom end - whether it’s ‘too much’ and the car changes gear is trusted to be down to VAGs design. I’m not questioning whether that’s set at the right point or not is not for me to say. But as I said right at the start it’s pointless pontificating over detail-less hearsay

I would hope so.

Even if just for their accounts / HMRC. 

They charged money, took VAT, had parts to buy and supply.   Surely they are not 'Cash in hand', nod's as good as a wink, no invoice no receipt.

 

Never in all my days have i seen the likes of that with stickers and i was a car sprayer & did warranty inspections & traded cars.

Just come off the phone to TP Services .......spoke to a really helpful man who is sending me all the info and history on the car. He checked if cam belt had been done and it has at 95,000 miles 😅 so that saves me  a few bob. He said the car was owned by a upholstery firm and the car only traveled up and down the motorway which would explain the high mileage.

He also said that they put the stickers on the door when the customer dosn,t present them with the service book.
