Service and questions for new owner

Featured Replies

Sorry for high jacking thread slightly. I have a brand new octavia vrs coming in few weeks, am I correct in thinking I don't need service done through dealer as long as my mechanic uses genuine skoda parts??

2 main dealerships are over hours drive and it's a major hassle to use any of them.

I was going to take the extra 2 years warranty but if it means I'm tied to dealership for servicing I won't.

Thanks for any help/advice.

Where in the highlands are you?

An hours drive and an hour or 2's wait is not that much is it really.   Who is it though. John Clark Group Skoda or A. N. Other?

You want any Updates doing as they come in so yes you can use others, but best use a place with Licensed Equipment and that gets TPI's etc.

Someone with the gear and more than just ideas.

Your car is only needing serviced each 2 years / 24 months unless changed to Fixed Servicing at the Dealers @ PDI, they should ask you.

Victoria Garage Maud Aberdeenshire might be a long way, but better than anyone in Inverness, Perth or Aberdeen to go to for a day out.

The service plans are now a waste of money, just seen a 2 year one for used car, and it doesn't cover things that apparently need one change every 2 years like brake fluid.

Most of it seems to be inspection of things you ought to be doing yourself like checking oil level or tyre depth.

So if it doesn't cover the scheduled service items, what is point of it, apart from money grabbing

I'm just outside Dornoch mate, my 2 options would be Arnold Clark or Howco. Both Inverness. It's 2 hour round trip plus hanging about Inverness all day. I stay on my own in middle nowhere and have 3 dogs to care for. I can't leave them for whole day. I have a really good mechanic local and would use genuine parts.

Sadly they are crap in Inverness and that is an issue.

Who is supplying the car?

?

What engine has it, Petrol / Hybrid / Diesel?

Best talk with your mechanic. Not much needs doing if all is well.

There are issues that can arise with a Mk4 Octavia, so be sure when the get the car the PDI was done correctly, and if not things are dealt with.

Excactly my point m8.

I've emailed skoda customer service so see what they say..

Well that was a waste of effort.

They have a script, someone somewhere in the world, maybe in the UK, maybe not can give a standard answer.

Please let us know what they say. Always good for a laugh.

I take my car to the Škoda dealer where I bought the car for servicing, etc, which is Sinclairs of Swansea.  It's 40 miles and just over an hour away, but usually a bit more with the traffic.

We're in a different situation though as we're both retired and we make it a day out when the car needs any work.  We book well in advance to ensure we have a courtesy car and then usually go off to Porthcawl for a walk along the beach or promenade, then on to the McArthur Glen outlet at Bridgend where there's plenty of places to eat as well as doing some shopping.  We don't have anyone or anything to care for at home (apart from a cat who lives outside anyway), so we can be away all day if we want.

Thoughts guys..??

Hello Blue, provided your local mechanic has the necessary equipment and knowledge, I'd personally go with him (or her?) does your mechanic have access to VAG online system?

Best find a good independent that does what needs doing when it should be done, and done properly, not just ticks in boxes.

+1 this. Get your car Skoda dealer serviced while in it's in warranty and then leg it to a decent independent as soon as you're out of warranty.

I'm confused. Find good independent mechanic bla bla bla.

Get you car skoda dealer bla bla bla. What one is it you agree with.

Oh is it a heads tails moment??

@Blueallblueno9 Members are just trying to help as best we can.

We are here all the time to confuse.

?

So which of Scotland hopeless Motor Groups is supplying your car, and is it getting delivered to you or are you collecting it, and is it a nice simple TDI or TSI and not a PHEV?

If Warranty work or TPI,s updates need doing you will need a Main Dealer or Authorised repairer.

If you get the car soon it is not needing a visit to a Main Dealer until 2025.  If even then.

Have them check bodywork when ever at a main dealer for the paint and corrosion warranty.  & put that inspection on the system.

If it needs and Oil & filter change, a pollen filter. an air filter or anything have the VAT Registered person do it, have the invoice and receipts for the parts and work carried out.

PS

If you have a 2.0 lt TSI coming and the Engine Cover is missing then ask them when that is getting delivered to you so you can fit it.

I used a car broker down South and he was Almost 3.5k better than Howco for exact same veichle. Its on the boat but should be here in few weeks. Skoda octavia vrs estate 2ltr deisel 4x4 dsg box.

Ok. So DSG oil change at 80,000 miles or sooner, and Haldex at 3 years / 30,000 miles or sooner. Oil and filter at 2 years, 18,000 + 20,000 miles.  I suggest sooner on all these.   Then maybe brake fluid first at 3 years unless Skoda have changed these cars back to first at 2 years.   No need to visit Main Dealers unless any issue.    Enjoy your new car.

That's great thanks for your help.

I'm just trying figure out how to hardwire my dash cam when it comes, seems pretty straightforward but  not sure what fuse to put it to. If I use one that folks are saying then I think this means my parking mode won't work.. Going through forum now.. Thanks.

See you in the Octavia Mk 4 section then.  Where adults with knowledge and experience can help.  I will butt out.  Electricity is all magic to me.

Not sure if you are aware, but you can lookup your manual for the car and the fuse assignment for each one.

https://manual.skoda-auto.com/004/en-com/Models

You won't need your VIN, but it can be quicker if you have it, otherwise scroll down to Ocatavia iV

You will still need some ideas from here on which fuse if permantly live, or find out with testing yourself.

Rear wiper is what guys are saying but when I turn of ignition I don't think my parking mode would work?

I would personally be surprised if he rear wiper was the one to use, but I've never loaded a dash cam for parking mode.

Might be an idea to make a new thread perhaps in Octavia iV section to see who has fitted one (if the search bares no fruit)

@Blueallblueno9

Play nice, people are only trying to help.
