Acronyms & Names

Hi There.

I’m new here and I’ll be posting soon about my lovely Fabia III.

Looking around here, there are acronyms and names that have no meaning at all to me. Is there an area/article where this tech-speak is explained?

Cheers.

Great. Thanks for your help.

I guess that the VCDS is in the dealership, and that the OBD is in the car?

Everything I explore on the car comes up with ‘consult dealer’ or something similar...

I christened the computer/display unit on the dashboard Hal 9000, as it is so unhelpful and annoying. Does it have an acronym as well?

You're opening Pandora's box here. 😆

OBD Port is a physical port that is inside the car, then you plug in VCDS which is an independently created piece of software, and a physical tool of the same name that can talk to the vehicle via the port.

VCDS is a tool used by enthusiast's and independent garages will often have it.

ODIS = Offboard Diagnostic Information System that is plugged into the OBD port and used by main dealers, independent workshops can also use this platform in some Countries.  This is the dealer level tool, and top dog of the diagnostic platforms.

Thank you so much for that information.

I had no idea that an independent might be able to assist with Hal 9000.

My dealership has no interest whatsoever in resolving my problems. They’re very interested in my wallet however.

I’ll retire to the Fabia III area now, and annoy people there.

Cheers!

Do you recall the days when cars were sold in the local paper small ads or in nationwide publications like Expand & Fart and you paid by the word? Loads of acronyms were used then that people today will have never heard of.

Here are a few off the top of my head, try and guess what they are and please add others.

HRW

FSH

CWW

OLO

FMDSH

PAS

EWF&R

I'm impressed.

The OLO was for One Lady Owner but could equally have been Loving Owner for all I can recall.

CWW was mainly used for MGB's and prospective enthusiast owners would have recognised it as Chrome Wire Wheels.

That'll explain why I didn't get the CWW one ..   MGs were well out of my price range...   My first car was a S/H Chevette.

OBD = Onboard Diagnostic (not sure why they added eleven)

OBD-II is the second version of the OBD standard, II being the Roman numeral for 2.

They should make Roman numeral spaghetti like they do Alphabetti Spaghetti, they would not need so many dies!

I dont actually think its eleven or 11.

I think it is more to do with OBD2 or more likely OBD II, II as in 2.

Thats my thoughts on it.
