Stripped thread in hub carrier!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've just acquired a 2000 Octavia 2.0 Estate with 12500 miles from new, which I am very pleased with.

However, I noticed a graunching under braking today, so whipped the wheels off to check the pads and see if there was anything amis. Sure enough, the nearside disc showed a score from a stone or some such. When I started to undo the caliper slider bolts it became apparant the that top one wasn't really very tight at all.

Further investigation leads me to believe that the actual thread in the hub carrier is stripped (bolt is fine). Needless to say, I have cleaned the pads and removed the small stone (which was embedded into the surface of a pad!) and put it all back together but the top bolt doesn't tighten properly.

Just wondering if hub carriers were as expensive as they sound or if there's any other solutions??

Thanks,

Justin.

You will need the carrier, and a bearing and a press to change the bearing over.

Looking at around £200 in parts.

I'm led to believe that the threads in the hubs themselves strip quite easily too. In this case the hub can be replaced (~£120 + bearing + fitting) or you can fit a helicoil.
