VW developing ID2(?) Golf variants EV

Featured Replies

I thought the ID 3 is Golf sized EV.......

We need Polo sized 5 seater EV.

And following the link in the article on small Skoda SUV:

Quote

Now Skoda’s new boss, Klaus Zellmer, has revealed that his team is trying to work out how to make an EV even more cheaply still, in a bid to offer a vehicle at a price range approaching that of the current Fabia supermini. It sells for as little as £12,000 in some Eastern European territories - at least £5,000 less than the planned price for the MEB Entry model.

Why can't they make basic small hatches that the vast majority want and can maybe afford? I don't really want a crossover / SUV, a medium sized estate would be great for the main car. For an 'entry level' car, why not make a Polo sized hatchback? The UP sized city car EVs sold / sell like hot cakes despite VW's best efforts to kill it off and second hand ones still command good prices. That is the small city EV they need to build as there is clearly demand. A Polo sized small car would be in demand also I think. ID.3 takes care of the Golf sized segment (even though they promise an EV golf in future). Cars need to get smaller.

Totally agree, somehow SUV also means charging a premium.

But what's funny is that although Nissan Leaf is marketed as Golf-like hatchback, it is actually taller than my neighbour's small-SUV the BMW x1, both exterior and seating position. The batteries under the floor makes EV's taller, so the only difference is how the car is stylised and marketed. SUV are popular these days (sorry), so cars are all bulked up to "have more road presence".

End of the day, I think the key is smaller footprint on the road. Cars should be able to breeze through 2.1m width restrictions and park in tight parking spaces. If it means taller EV, it shouldn't matter. As long as we don't get charged for adding SUV style plastic cladding.

I'm told that those who go on the school run prefer SUVs because of the higher sitting position and the perception that they will perform better in a crash - so the car makers are designing and building what a large chuck of potential customers appear to want.

'Insiders' are just VW Group Employees as in the Media Team telling what they want to to Haymarket Media Group who are Autocar / What Car / Piston Heads and a contractor for VW, so what the VW Board want released as a story.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haymarket_Media_Group

Now other Media, Social etc can just rehash what Autocar was allowed to say.

I’d love a superb EV based on the 800v architecture platform.

edit…. Especially an estate 👍

Looks like a bigger polo or a smaller golf. Perfect size for town driving.

Price it right, make sure EV-ness works well (the software, the winter charging experience, don't need huge battery) and we will be on a winner.

The Skoda version may well be our local runabout, bought second hand in 8-10 years time after Leaf V2H is knackered. Would be good for future cars like this to have V2H.

I thought the Kamiq would make a nice EV, sizewise.

I would like to see how EV's survive high and low speed collisions

something that has not appeared in the press, as far as I'm aware.

VW group need to get selling more of the EV,s they already have in production at lower prices.    They are so behind the other manufacturers that have smaller EV,s selling now and going to 2nd or 3rd generations already.      The Magazine's / Media need to call out the VW bosses and ask if they will take a 200 euro deposit now on a car to sell for 20,000 euro in 2 years and deliver cars or 250 euros on 25,000 euro ones.    VW are so full of guff to get social media coverage.

I have a feeling VW do not know where the batteries are going, where they will source them from or how much they will cost them.

Renault will have their new Small EV's out for sale before VW Group reveal production ready vehicles.

Two year or so away !

Will VW's crushing debt burden even mean that the company exists in its current form ?

$200B in debt and wanting another $200B to transform itself to EV production when other companies are already there.

Hundreds of thousands of unsold cars in China.

Almost giving away ID4 in China for £20K  .....   https://carnewschina.com/2023/03/13/vw-slashed-id-prices-in-china-id-4-down-by-19-to-25000/

VW Golf no longer top selling car in Europe, TESLA model Y way outstripping it and sales of Dacias Duster, Sandero and the Chine made Dacia Spring moving in to the top 20 along with TESLA models.

Dead men walking like most European and US car makers unless customs tariffs doubled, tripled and maybe quadrupled from its present 10% Ad valorem.

The rear bench is an excellent idea! At least in my mind where cable doesn't need to be dug out of the boot. But in practice for anyone with child-seat it's a completely wasted space.

I hate idea of digging cable out of the boot. I'd much rather have some sort of internal storage so I can get out of the car with cable in hand and ready to plug in. When I had to regularly use the cable in winter on the Leaf, I used to put the cable under the floor mats in the rear footwell, in front of the child seat.

Perhaps an under rear seat drawer would be better.

VW,s Media Department must be a right lazy bunch along with the management.

Someone must just send across to the crazy people at AutoExpress some info and they publish it.

We are still being told around £20,000 & 2025.

'Soon' must have a different meaning at Autoexpress!

Looks like the ID.2 will be called a Polo

2 1/2 years since the thread started. £20,000 back then.

Really VW stretch out these things and really another year to delivery.

Truth is probably the are still not able to get Type Approval and just show the damn cars properly.

Can they really build and make a profit and dealers make money, or are the dealers just something else that are getting the chop?
