My Octavia Mk3 2.O TDi needs a new battery. I have a good battery in stock from a previous  car - Type 096 Heavy Duty - but when  I try to cross check this with my Skoda using eBay, it comes up as "not suitable." Does anyone know if this is correct, or if not what battery I need ? Also, are there any issues caused to the Skoda systems by disconnecting the battery other than having to re-set the sound system code ? Thanks chaps

What battery technology was fitted and what is the new style (EFB/AGM?)

 

Some basic guidance

 

If StopStart function is on your vehicle, you need an EFB or AGM 096 battery (marked as such on the lid). A standard SLI flooded isn’t up to the job of handling S/S charging profiles over time and wears out quicker than the S/S graded batteries even if S/S function is switched off. S/S function is more than just cutting the engine when stationary. 

@likaleica The 096 battery size is not an issue - what is most likely the problem is either the type (EFB or AGM required) or the terminal layout is not suitable.

You will probably get a lot of spurious error codes pop up when you connect the new battery, but these should all clear after a short drive. AFAIK, ICE codes are permanent as long as the unit stays in original vehicle.

Get a picture of currently fitted battery (make sure we can see the battery cover also)

And you still need to post the year of your car

I just fitted a normal non start stop to mine and disconnect the small black plug on the earth terminal to disengage start stop and it’s been fine for minths

Car is 2017. Will post pix of battery when it stops chucking it down with rain !

Thank you. I don't think stop start is any benefit unless you constantly drive in city traffic - which I don't!

Micro hybrid is its correct term. It’s a software controlled way of reducing energy consumption and emissions by putting more work through the battery and only using alternator output when needed. It’s constantly varying and needs to know what is going on throughout the electrical circuits to determine the correct alternator output. It’s also set up to maximise the life expectancy of the battery during an average lifetime duty cycle.

 

Unregulated charging overcharges the battery, excess energy is turned to heat. The last thing you need in a 12v battery is excess heat as it accelerates decay. 
 

A standard battery will work in S/S applications but it’s set up means it’s approx 50% less durable than the equivalent AGM. 
 

AGM - Absorbent Glass Mat 

Top spec SS battery that takes a lot of abuse very well and accepts charge faster than the alternatives. 

 

EFB - Enhanced Flooded Battery

Entry level S/S battery with polymer based plate envelopes and electrolyte mixer elements to boost durability against abuse. A halfway house between SLI and AGM. 

 

SLI Flooded battery

Starting/Lights/Ignition 

A basic battery that does the job but has no thrills at the expense of long term performance and resistance to abuse. Has a deep cycle frequency of around 50% less than the equivalent AGM. Will overheat quicker than alternatives if overcharged leading to moisture loss, wear, premature failure. Most likely to short circuit a cell or fail early out of these three battery types.

SORTED 😁Acting on good advice on here I went for an AGM start/stop battery. Very cheap at £124.99 delivered from GSF Car Parts. Only 3 yr warranty but does the job. BTW to avoid any issues in disconnecting the battery I connected the new one to the two battery leads with jump leads until I got the old battery out. Best to have an assistant helping to avoid shorting anything out ! Thanks again fellas

You should really get the new battery programmed to the car or it won’t know there is a new battery fitted and charging won’t be adapted to a new battery

Thank you. No idea how to programme the battery to the car ! Does anyone on here know how please ? Hope it doesn't have to go to a Skoda dealer !

You would need access to a VCDS or similar to code it. Skoda will do it for you but there are also  plenty of independents that have the capability.

Its done now but for others -

varoom beat me to what I was going to put - see his previous post as his downloads detail of what 'coding' of the battery may be required - which it will be required if you've swapped from EFB to AGM battery.

Thanks again. I've fitted an AGM battery just like the original so I'm hoping the car will "learn" it as mentioned in the guide sent on Frb 15
