Ignition lock issue

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Yesterday I changed the fogs in my skoda from original to LED's. I then started the car and turned on the lights and it was fine. I turned off and locked up. I came back about half hour later and the key won't turn, the park lights work and the radio. I removed the battery pole and put it back but nothing changed. What went wrong?

Either battery is low power, or you popped a fuse perhaps?

When you say "key won't turn" do you mean physically, or do you mean it won't turn over the engine?

Hey varooom,

The physical key won't turn. It's like the steering is locked, only it isn't.

Very odd, not something I have heard of, but I suggest if possible you check battery Voltage and all the fuses are good.

Will do.thank you

Two possible causes. The security pin that stops the wheel being turned when locked has failed and is jamming the mechanism OR the switch assembly at the back of the lock has failed.

The latter is a more common problem and there are pictures in threads on here that will help you to take out the lock and the switch to make a repair.

Had my Mk2 for 12 years now and never had that happen...... let's hope it doesn't, now i've said that, Lol.

Good luck to the Op to get it sorted.

Turning the steering wheel might help release the lock too 👍

Much like this:

You tried just nudging the wheel a bit and turning the key at the same time?

I assumed this ^^^ would be familiar to most, if not all .......... but maybe not

Thats the thing, the wheel is turning

As I said above, it's a lock/ switch problem. I did the search on here for you and this is the first post I found:-

Pikpilot, thank you

Try a squirt of WD-40 in the lock before getting the tools out.

hey guys,we'll the WD40 didn't work. I spoke to an ignition switch guy and he told me to have my mechanic remove the entire switch component and bring it to him and he'll check it out. Aiming to have this done tomorrow. Just an update. Thanks again. I'll keep you guys updated.

It is probably a battery related problem, which does not mean the battery is dead. It could be an alternator problem, slipping aux belt, a fuse blown, corroded earth strap etc. Use a multimeter to help find the cause or take the car an automotive electrician.
