Very odd mpg

Featured Replies

I had my Fabia VRS parked in the sun today and was amazed to see when I had driven about half a mile the computer was showing 113.00 mpg. I just went about 5 miles and it eventually dropped to 74 mpg. Is this normal in summer as I've only had it since late March?

Do you have it on real time MPG or Average. Real time goes to crazy numbers, but your average wont go that high

In this hotter weather mine has been giving high instantaneous and tankful MPG figures (like 60 mpg+ around town without trying).

Was there a very long queue behind?

Seriously. I dont think the mpg on the computer is very accurate. Not heard of it behaving like this though. Try a thread search

Was that half a mile all down hill?

mine showed something like 113 mpg before now and you can make it say that by driving at about 30 in 4th down a hill or something, i cant remember now its too late

I've been an avid watcher of mine - I have my computer on current mpg all the time. I think it goes up to 200mpg - you get up to this in top gear on a nice downslope A road, whereupon it then goes to the three dashes as your clearly using a miniscule amount of fuel. Uphill on said A road in top gear, I'll get it'll drop to say 25mpg. In general though I reckon it's fairly accurate although It does constanlty change as you're driving whcih can be a bit misleading. I drove from Exeter to London yesterday morning for my week of work up here, I used the A303/M3 and kept between 55 and 65 mph all the way using cruise wherever possible with just one 'burn off' with one of them 650 trials bikes coming past Harrods (I think I shocked him  ) - I averaged 67.2 for the journey  which ties in with the

Yep it's all about the position of the throttle pedal so if you're using it lightly then the mpg will be high. It may also skew the journey mpg figures :D

Thanks, everyone, some very interesting replies! No big queue behind as I was doing 60 on a narrow road. I was using average as I did not understand real time figures, I thought it had gone nuts! After the explanation I will try again. So much to learn about the Fabia VRS but it is a fun car to drive.

Normal mine on the last motorway run got 62mpg, in the winter months that can drop down to 45mpg beats the last runs at 54mpg.

you should get better mpg in cold weather not worse

Diesels may be different as they put anti-waxing agents in diesel in the winter months which may lead to poorer mpg :D

Depends on the driving...on my commute my engine rarely gets up to temperature in winter, hence is less efficient than in summer. Long journeys tend to use less fuel in winter though...
