How to tell if tow bar is factory fitted?

Featured Replies

Hi - I will be going to look at a second hand car later... already slightly concerned it has a tow bar on it (as I have no plans for towing, and won't be able to tell its history of towing)

Is there a way to at least identify whether the tow bar was factory fitted? (at least that will give me some comfort that the car hasn't been put under an extra stress from not having a factory fitted one... springs, fan etc)

Do you know the VIN?

Hi Pete - unfortunately not yet - just the reg number at this point in time

If it helps, on my factory fit towbar, the pull down electrics socket is stamped with the VW Audi Group logos and the hitch is the same as the one in the manual.

Could be a quick and dirty check before going on line.

(Doesn't help if it was a dealer fit from new by a local fitter as offered from new as I was, but I went factory)

Read/photograph it off the base of the windscreen when you get there and PM it to me, I can look it up.

Thanks folks. So turned up and the car wasn’t even as advertised (no heated seats, heated steering wheel or active cruise control)… on the plus side it had front parking sensors which weren’t spec’d

anyways - I did grab the VIN but ultimately walked away… fwiw, the tow bar was detached in the boot and looked like this

Gut feeling is that will have been aftermarket - when we had a factory fit on our old Octavia the foam insert in the spare wheel in the boot had a specific shaped hole to fit the detachable towbar.

That is identical to our factory fit towbar on our 2016 Vrs, made by westfalia but branded Vag. We had the insert in the boot without spare and there was a perfectly shaped space for it there.

I'd agree, it looks like the one that was factory fit on my 2016 Scout
