Boosting stock turbo

Featured Replies

I have Octavia ML1 2002 which is 2.0 non turbo. I am planning to fit the vrs turbo kit under the hood. I do believe it is providing around 180 hp and its not what I need, as I am looking for minimum 250hp. I have been told that the stock turbo of the vrs could be boosted to provide 300hp. Is it true?

Fitting a manufacturer turbo would be the best option for me as it has been advised.

Or do I just need to fit in a aftermarket turbo charge? Is there any that fits under the hood without the headache of lots of modifications?

Hello OJ, what is the condition and mileage of the engine?

Simply strapping a turbo onto what is possibly a fairly worn engine could turn out to be a very bad idea. Fuelling will also be a major issue.

Hi Warrior193,

The car is 144,649 miles. Couple of months ago, I have replaced all worn out parts in the engine component. I had a bit of oil leakage, but its running like new now and no other issues since then.

Does your Octavia have 5 or 6 speed gearbox? The specification I can see for the 2.0 litre (5 speed, non-turbo?) is only 116 PS - The 1.8 litre, 6 speed is quoted as 180PS.

Yes. it is 5 speed gearbox and its non turbo 116 hp. The 1.8 liter actually comes in 2 engines, one of them is turbo charged which produce 180hp.

At least 3 in the Octy; the non-turbo and turbos at 150 and 180 bhp depending on trim and market. Then there's the 1.8t 220 in some Audis...

225? There's also the 210 (ish) which was in earlier Audi S3s and Leon Cupra Rs before they went to the 225 engine. There was also the special edition mk1 TT which had 240bhp. Probably some other variants around as well...

Anyway, I think it will be prohibitively expensive to turbocharge your current engine. You'd be better off either fitting a 1.8T engine and modifying/tuning it to your power requirements or just buying another car that already has the power you're after.

@petrolbloke Already have the Audi s5 2012 v8 engine. Kinda wanted to start a new project on the Octavia. To be honest I will never find an engine of the 1.8T in here, I order most of the parts online from Europe. That's why I wanted to modify the current engine other that shipping the whole engine (it has its risks of being broken, has issues.... etc).

Moreover, is boosting the 1.8T to 280+ HP true?

What engine and gearbox codes do you currently have?

The problem is the 2.0 non turbo is a totally different old breed 8 valve engine where all the ancillaries inc manifolds are totally different.  It also has a reputation for oil burning although the 2.0 mk1 my Dad had was fine to be honest. Also I don't think the old 5 speed box is designed for many more gg's.

I think you'd be better getting a complete suitable engine / gearbox although even then there are other differences eg mounts,  engine management, Intercooler, cooling system  (as I've discovered in the past). Beware engine/gearbox mounts especially where they are bolted to captive nuts in chassis etc - On a 20 year old car these can be seized / snap off etc which can be a big job to sort.
