2015 Scout 1.8 TSI noise from rear diff

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, I'm looking at purchasing a 2015 Octavia Scout 1.8 TSI. It's done 160,000 Kms (100,000) miles and most of the service history is from main agent here.

Only thing worrying me is there is a definite noise from rear when you are off acceleration, coasting or decelerating. I guess it could be wheel bearing but it's not from a specific corner so I'm thinking rear diff. Are they always a bit noisy and at this mileage or will it need replacing costing quite a sizeable amount as Skoda parts in NZ are hard to come by and prices high.

What servicing has that main agent done, as in the Haldex. Is that at 30,000 mile / 3 year intervals or sooner.  Then there is the rear diff that could maybe do with a oil change.  Diff not Haldex.   First look at the state of the coupler on the propshaft.  Is that a rusty mess.  Not an expensive replacement.  You will find threads on that. Look in the Yeti guide section.    EDIT.  I bumped a thread for you in the Yeti section.

From service history Haldex has been serviced 3 times so far.

@sunnyskodanzAs long as Serviced as in properly and not just the oil changed.  UK Main Dealer Servicing does not include a clean out or filter change.

Have you looked under at the condition of the coupling?

I'll get the coupling checked out and ask about mesh / filter in Haldex. Has anyone ever used additive in rear diff to quiten it ?

The last time they mixed the holes up.

Drain and refill the diff oil, if my hypothesis is correct only a few drips of blackened and carbonised oil will come out, refill with fresh oil and you might just have dodged a bullet like I did.

If the correct volume of clean as new oil comes out then they did the job correctly, your time will not have been wasted doing the oil change and you can then look at possibly changing the Guibo coupling harmonic balancer.

I have been getting some diff noise but now quite suddenly a singing type screech has appeared at around 110kph, I have a new coupling to fit and hope that will resolve it.

If the last Hladex service was quite recent you should investigate the diff oil without delay, dry diffs usually fail catastrophically very quickly, I was very fortunate to have done 200 miles and get away with a noisier but still functioning differential.

As for the additives...............🤣🤣🤣

My 2 cents are that @J.R.is right that many drain and fill the wrong hole as they are next to each other..

Second thing is, the noise and failure of these diffs is pretty common.. I’ve read a lot about them because mine does it as well and you will be surprised how unreliable component this is.

Third bearings are also very common to fail and they don’t fail catastrophically, but just one of the layers wear out and that causes the noise. So traditional methods to determine is a noise caused by a bad bearing doesn’t always work, e.g. turning left or right to stop or significantly decrease the noise.
