CBZB Chain tensioner

Featured Replies

I had the annoying start up rattle for a second or so which would immediately go once oil pressure built. The lack of rattle or guide noise during revving or under load led me to think chain must be ok 👍. I decided to swap out chain tensioner, other forum members have taken precautions before unbolting the tensioner, by removing timing case cover and wedging guide and tensioner  in place so chain remains taut on the top camshaft sprocket. I decided not to having seen videos of how chain sits in situ and guides are bolted down. The tensioner is located behind the engine block on the left  hand side under the oil temp sensor.

I had ordered a tensioner online but alas it was the wrong type, and sent it back. I ended up ordering one from Skoda, due to convenience, at the cost £60, the Skoda dealers literally found the corner from me. Mine wasn’t the latest type but the washer type, with stub at end, it’s supposed to be an upgrade over the originally fitted part.
I primed new tensioner in oil and fitted it, I disconnected coil pack feed and cranked engine a few times and then reconnected it and after a fortnight sitting idle I started the car. It fired up with no rattle (for those whose are gonna say that I cranked it and oil pressure must have built, answer is I tried that when I swapped out oil filter and cranked it with ignition disconnected to get oil into filter and when I started the car the rattle was loud as ever), the car idled quietly.  Replacing just the tensioner can save a lot of ball ache, it save me swapping out chains sprockets and guides !!!

I’ve posted pic of the original tensioner and the wrong one sent out to me. You can see size difference.
