New superb owner, a few queries

Featured Replies

I recently bought a 2012 elegance with a DSG.

I've got it at a very reasonable price as there were a few jobs that needed doing to it, it came with quite a lot of history but had been stood for awhile so the discs were badly pitted and it wasn't in a very Good condition and needed a very deep clean inside and out.

Haven't got it home, given it a good clean and realised that it was metallic black not solid (a bonus) we set about the mechanicals, haven't driven it for a week and cracked up about 500 miles we realised that there was a wheel bearing noise and also when you are under acceleration a gearbox noise as well.

This weekend has been spent doing pads, and discs, front wheel bearings, removals the rounded off locking wheel nuts!! And doing a gearbox oil and filter change and this is where the biggest query is raised.

We know that the gearbox oil was done by 40,000 miles ago and I was expecting the oil to come out black or certainly with a dark tinge to it however it came out almost honey brown, not much darker than the oil that went in. Is this the case? If there is anybody who has done the gearbox or change can they remember what the colour of the oil was like when it came out of the gearbox.

I'm starting to think that the previous owner knew that there was an issue and has possibly tried a gearbox oil change just to see whether that would cure the problem. Having read a bit about this gearboxes it seems that the bearings are area that can give issue, I plan on keeping the car for a few years so I may as well bite the bullet and spend £1000 on having a reconditioned gearbox fitted knowing that it comes with a warranty.

Plenty more to do, the Columbus unit is being replaced with a android head unit that does CarPlay and the interior light needs replacing as the switch has burnt out and finally a dash cam needs to be fitted, all of these are fairly straightforward jobs should take no more than another day or so.

To @Jayw13702 - Hi.. I change my "DSG"-Oil and on another two Cars with the same "DSG" ("DQ 250") by myself. 40.000 Miles (60.000 Kilometers) are a little much. If the Car is used almost in city - 20.000 Miles (30.000 Kilometers) are better. Change "DSG"-Oil and filter. After that if the Car are driven good, there is no strange sounds and the gears chenges upside down without rattles may be the "DSG" is OK. It is very important to fill the "DSG" with "OEM" "DSG"-Oil not alternative one. It must be the right quantity also.
