Best place for front pads & discs?

Featured Replies

OK, the slight wobble under braking has turned into quite a bad vibration and I have to get it sorted, well so I’ve been told!

Assuming I “just” need front discs, and assuming pads as well, where’s the best place to go?  I’ve had a search for Skoda fixed price d&p replacement but have drawn a blank.  I know if the car goes anywhere near a main dealer and I mention brakes it will result in major wealth redistribution from me to them!

The car has just ticked over 20k miles and 3 1/2 years old.  Most, like 95%, of that mileage is up and down the motorway between SE England and the Highlands so not heavy on brakes.  I’ll take the wheels off next week and have a look but not sure I can tell if a disc is warped.

Thoughts oh wise ones out there?

Have you got 225/40R19 tyres? These are prone to pothole damage due to the very low sidewalls.

You could swap the wheels front to back to rule out that it's not them causing the wobble/vibration.

It's a TRW front brake system, so I would go with TRW front brake pads.

ATE brake discs are slightly better quality than TRW because they are coated rather than painted so more resistant to corrosion.

Parts and labour shouldn't come to much more than £200. My mechanic would probably charge about 45 minutes labour for the job.

If you get them from autodoc, Monday is usually their biggest discount day at about 36% discount, with weekends offering the least discount. But it varies every day of the week.

Not 19” rubber bands but standard SE 255/55 17s (from memory).  I have a set of winter wheels in the garage, I’ll bung them on and see if the vibration is the same.  And the way this summer is going, might just leave them on!

And thanks for the parts links, will have a look at those and see if the local garage I use for my other car will fit parts I buy myself. 👍

Škoda and in fact all modern VAG discs are made from cheese.  A particularly quick trip up and down the A7 put paid to the front ones on our 190 TDI at c. 24K miles and the rear have now had it at 30K.

I had drilled Brembos with Brembo HP pads fitted to the front and 6.5K miles later I'm still happy with those.  I've booked the car into my local VAG indy to have Pagid discs and pads fitted to the rear.

I have the same Brembos fitted to the front of my Yeti and I was recently experiencing a bit of vibration. Hoping it wasn't coming from the front, I had Pagid discs and pads fitted to the rear.  The rears

were pretty shot anyway.  It cured the problem and made a surprising difference to the retardation.
