Skoda Yeti speedometer problem

Featured Replies

I had failing back lighting, so like any person who does not want to spend too much, I tried to fix it myself.

First, I took it out of the car thinking it was going to be bulbs, which turned out to be LEDs. Then I tried ordering a used one and replace mine with one that had working LEDs but quickly found out that the car won't start if you replaced the speedometer and that some coding is required, which I cannot do.

Next, I had two speedometers no solution, so  I tried transferring the LEDs from one to another, it was very difficult but I succeeded in the end and all the failed LEDs were replaced. I put everything back in place and saw that I all LEDs were working.

But then another problem popped up as new warning lights turned on that were not on previously that indicate problems with steering and brakes, which I know to not be the case. I drove the car to see if there was anything but the car drove just fine. I tried erasing the codes with an OBD but they do not get erased.

So now, I am out of ideas. I am thinking of buying another used speedometer and finding out how to set it up in the car but I am not sure about coding is done. Does anyone have any ideas about how to get rid of these error lights that have turned on? Or about who does the coding for the replacement speedometer?

Sorry this post was so long and thanks in advance!

..could it be a coincidence that one of your wheel sensors has also failed? When my (wheel sensor) failed I also got lots of warning lights to do with steering / ABS etc as the wheel sensors are linked to so many things?

I read the opening post and see the perfect example of not meddling when you don't understand things!

At a guess, your car has a MK60 based ABS pump. When you swapped the clusters, the ABS pump will have noticed the VIN mismatch and wiped it's own coding.

The easiest solution is to have Skoda or someone with ODIS online recode the module pulling the correct coding data from the VAG servers.

You can try and generate a working code yourself but there is no guarantee it'll be 100% correct. A VCDS autoscan or similar will help confirm the issue and may help folk suggest a working coding.

Its inconcievable that all of the backlighting Leds will have failed, maybe a dry joint somewhere which you reflowed when replacing the leds.

The car drives fine you say, did the warning lights go out? What you described is completely normal after a battery disconnection.

If the only problem you have is not being able to erase the historic fault codes that is because you only have a basic code reader and these are safety related systems requiring access to the individual controllers.

Try an ABS stop in a safe area to be sure the system is operating.

Did the failed backlighting happen when you were driving the car after dark with out lights on, that is how it is supposed to work to tell you to switch lights on.

I think that this being their 1st post and it being posted at the same minute they joined and has not been back since is strange and makes me wonder how real that post is.

I expect it's genuine, they asked the same on the Yeti forums and based on their username/profile picture, they are a dealer.

It's quite possibly this car they are having issues with: https://orbitautos.co.uk/vehicle/name/skoda-yeti-se-tsi-dsg/

Please note that an administration fee of £249 applies to all our responses to the OP's request for ideas! 🤣

£6699 for a 13 year old 1.2tsi ? 🤨

Swapping speedos is complicated and requires dealer level diagnostics, VCDS wont do it - I specified that I wanted backlighting permanently switched on when I upgraded my S spec to full FIS.
