Hi, 

I have been informed by my local Skoda dealership that from last month, Skoda has changed the suggested frequency that you should have your cam belt changed. It used to be 5 years, however now I am being informed that it is 15 years or 140,000 miles! Don't get me wrong, if this is true, it saves me money, however I wanted to check to see if anyone else is aware of this, and why this has now changed ?

From other threads on the subject, I gather that the 5 year rule only applied to the UK.

 

On the continent, they always went much longer.

UK used to be out of line with much of Europe which was much longer.  But of course the engine factory doesn't know which car on main production line each one will be put in, so was a historic anomaly 

 

Officially there is no time limit, and 15 years is an estimate, although various dates from 10 years upwards are doing rounds on internet forums.  What is supposed to happen now is the belt is inspected at major services for signs of wear and appropriate advice given if showing signs of wearing.
